It keeps the original story’s core while modernizing controls and combat, adding three prequel missions, and expanding the campaign’s weapons and vehicles. The announcement describes a campaign remake—not a remake of every part of the original game package.
What kind of remake is Halo: Campaign Evolved?
Halo Studios describes Halo: Campaign Evolved as a ground-up remake of the original campaign, rebuilt with high-definition visuals, refined level design, enhanced cinematics, a remastered soundtrack, rebuilt sound design, and rerecorded dialogue. Executive Producer Damon Conn said the team wanted to begin with “the original campaign that defined Halo” and make its story understandable to new players. Xbox Wire’s announcement Q&A explains that framing.
The campaign’s familiar missions remain central, but they are not the only story content: the remake adds three prequel missions starring Master Chief and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson. Halo Studios says the full campaign contains 13 missions. Halo Studios’ announcement outlines the remake’s core additions.
How does the gameplay change?
Aiming and vehicle combat
Players can aim down sights with all guns, a significant change to how Combat Evolved’s weapons are handled. The weapons are intended to retain their recognizable behavior while accommodating the adjusted aiming. Vehicle combat also expands: players can hijack enemy Ghosts and Banshees, while enemies can hijack the player’s vehicles in turn. The remake also adds use of a Wraith tank and a rear seat for the Warthog. More weapons and Skulls
Halo’s feature list names nine additional weapons drawn from across the series, including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle. PlayStation Blog also lists the SMG, Fuel Rod Cannon, and Beam Rifle among the added weapons; it identifies a Battle Rifle, Brute Plasma Rifle, and Spike Rifle in the three new missions. The lists describe additions, not replacements for the original arsenal.
Additional Skulls let players modify aspects of a run, including weapons, enemy behavior, player attributes, and environmental effects. They offer a way to change the campaign’s challenge and feel without changing its underlying story.

What does the remake keep from Combat Evolved?
The remake retains the original campaign’s recognizable mission structure and signature encounters while revising controls, spaces, and presentation. In an Xbox Wire hands-on preview of an Assault on the Control Room demo, the mission’s snowy, linear spaces still allowed different approaches, with broad weapon and vehicle options and redesigned Forerunner interiors. Creative Director Max Szlagor described the mission as one that “really exemplifies the core sandbox experience.” This was a preview of a demo, not a review of the full game or a performance test. Which platforms and co-op options are announced?
The announced platforms are Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire specifies Xbox PC and Steam for PC access. The campaign supports two-player local split-screen on consoles and up to four-player online co-op across console and PC. Halo also describes cross-play and shared progression for online co-op.

Halo Studios announced a global release date of July 28, 2026, at 8 a.m. PDT, with July 29 listed for Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets. Early access was announced for July 23, or July 24 in those markets. Those dates are now past, but the announcement alone does not confirm that the game launched or establish current store availability; check the relevant platform’s current listing for status.

The June 2026 announcement described a physical Collector’s Edition for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 with a game disc, Premium Edition upgrade voucher, SteelBook, 12-inch Master Chief statue, LED Cortana data-chip replica, three 11-by-17-inch art prints, and a physical manual. Halo called the console edition limited and named the Xbox Game Studios Gear Shop as its destination. Its Steam Collector’s Edition was described as voucher codes rather than a physical disc. Xbox Wire also announced day-one access through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That is an announced access path, not confirmation of current subscription inclusion. Check the current Game Pass catalog before subscribing for this game.
