You can try emojis and other characters in your public Steam profile name by editing it in Profile Settings. Steam does not publish a supported-character list or guarantee that every character will display correctly in every game or client, so save your choice and check how it appears where you use Steam.
Change your public profile name—not your account name
Steam distinguishes your changeable player or profile name from your Steam Account Name and SteamID. Editing the profile name changes the name other people see; it does not change your account login identifier or SteamID. Steam says the latter two cannot be changed, even by Steam Support. - Sign in to the Steam account whose profile you want to edit.
- Open Steam’s profile editor.
- Edit the profile name field, paste or type the emoji or character you want, and save your changes.
- Check the saved name in the Steam views and games that matter to you.
Which emojis and special characters work?
Steam’s published profile guidance does not provide an emoji or Unicode allowlist, character limit, or promise of consistent display across Steam clients and individual games. A character that appears in your profile may look different, be replaced, or fail to display in a particular game or interface. Treat each choice as a trial rather than assuming any character is universally supported.

A practical way to test a name
- Use a character you can copy and paste into Steam’s profile-name field.
- Save the name, then inspect it in your profile and in the Steam client or game contexts where other players will see it.
- Check that the name remains readable when the symbol is small or appears beside ordinary text.
- If it displays incorrectly or makes the name hard to recognize, replace it with a simpler character or remove it.
Remember that your profile name is public
Steam says profile names and avatars are visible to friends and strangers in multiplayer games, chats, leaderboards, discussion forums, reviews, and published content. These names cannot be hidden. Steam asks users to choose names suitable for its international, all-ages community, and it may moderate or clear names under its community rules. Read Steam Support’s profile-name guidance before choosing a name intended for public display.
What happens to your previous names?
Steam keeps the previous ten profile names and provides a way to clear previous aliases. Clearing them on Steam does not erase information that other sites may already have collected: Steam warns that third parties can scrape public profile information and keep their own records. If an old name could identify you or reveal something you would rather not share, changing or clearing the Steam alias history cannot guarantee that it disappears elsewhere.

If Steam will not save the change
Steam’s suggested troubleshooting steps focus on your account and connection rather than the character itself. Check the following:
- Make sure you are signed in to the correct account.
- Confirm Steam is online, not in Offline Mode.
- Sign in to Friends & Chat.
- If editing in the Steam client still fails, try the browser-based profile editor.
If the name saves but a symbol does not appear as intended in a particular game, that is a display-compatibility issue; Steam does not guarantee that every game will render every profile-name character the same way.
