Rather than treating the setting as a backdrop for ordinary combat, the announcement tied city operations to the broader planetary campaign. Baskin wrote: “Inside the city biomes, you will tackle operations and work to liberate cities together, having a significant impact on planetary campaigns.”
How did the Super Earth city campaign work?
Players fought to repel Illuminate forces at their landing areas and liberate cities. The official description warned that control could shift quickly between invaders and defenders, presenting the invasion as a contested campaign rather than a settled front.

Is Heart of Democracy still the current Helldivers 2 war?
No. The update describes the game’s May 2025 launch context. PlayStation’s official Helldivers 2 news chronology lists later content through 2026, including Devoid of Liberty and subsequent Warbonds. Heart of Democracy remains a useful reference for the Super Earth city invasion, but its announcement does not establish the current campaign state or current gameplay balance.
