When did the Illuminate come to Helldivers 2?
Omens of Tyranny was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 and made available on December 12, 2024. PlayStation Blog called it live in its announcement that day, while the event’s trailer listing described it as available now. That supports calling the update a shadowdrop, although these sources do not establish the precise minute it became playable relative to the broadcast.

In the official PlayStation Blog announcement, Katherine Baskin, Arrowhead Game Studios’ Social Media and Community Manager, wrote: “The newest major update for Helldivers 2, Omens of Tyranny, featuring the return of the Illuminate faction, is now live!” The post opens in the game’s fictional voice; its concrete update details are the studio’s announcement, not independent reporting on the fictional events.
What is Omens of Tyranny?
Omens of Tyranny was a major Helldivers 2 update that added the Illuminate as a third enemy faction, alongside the Terminids and Automatons. The official announcement framed their return as the end of an absence of almost a century since the First Galactic War—a story-world timeline, not a real-world statistic. At launch, the Illuminate’s intentions were described as unclear.

The announcement said the faction was attacking, constructing mysterious structures, abducting citizens and using mind control. The The Game Awards 2024 trailer likewise presented the update as adding new enemies and urban environments.
Who are the Voteless?
The Voteless are Super Earth citizens brainwashed by the Illuminate and turned against the principles they once represented, according to the official update announcement. They are not a separate faction in that description, but civilians transformed into a threat by the Illuminate’s mind control. The Game Awards trailer also identifies them as mind-controlled civilians.

What is the FRV in Omens of Tyranny?
The Fast Recon Vehicle, or FRV, is a manual-transmission vehicle for reconnaissance and combat. The official announcement said the whole squad can ride together, with passengers able to lean out of the windows and fire. Patch 01.002.001, published December 17, 2024, also references the FRV appearing in colonies; that patch note is a launch-era detail, not confirmation of how the vehicle behaves in the current game.
Arrowhead’s 01.002.001 patch notes provide a dated reference to the vehicle after the update’s release. The Game Awards trailer emphasized urban environments, while the PlayStation Blog announcement confirms the faction and vehicle without detailing map design.
