Craig Lee Thomas became the face of Helldivers 2’s opening propaganda cinematic after former lead writer Russ Nickel had about seven days to find a new performer. The character’s name came later: players dubbed him John Helldiver, and Arrowhead eventually adopted the name.
Who is John Helldiver?
John Helldiver is the name fans use for the patriotic spokesperson in Helldivers 2’s opening cinematic. Craig Lee Thomas performed the role. The distinction matters: Thomas played the character, but the developers did not originally give him the name John Helldiver.
How did the developers cast the character?
Former lead writer Russ Nickel said the cinematic script had been sent off, and he heard little about it until he learned filming was due to begin in roughly a week. Goodbye Kansas, the animation studio, had planned to use an unnamed actor based in Sweden. Nickel thought the performer was perfectly good, but felt the character needed a different kind of comic energy.
Nickel recalled his brief: “We need to get the funniest person we can possibly find.” Arrowhead agreed with the direction, leaving Nickel about seven days to find someone. He reached out to casting contacts in Los Angeles, and Thomas’s audition tape quickly put him on the shortlist. Thomas was selected and travelled to Sweden to film.

Why did Thomas’s performance fit?
Thomas has described enjoying the role’s exaggerated, insincere patriotism: “The sort of performative, jingoistic, ‘Hey, I’m the cheesiest, most insincere,’ that thing, is something that I always have fun doing.” Nickel’s explanation is that the satire depends on a mismatch: the propaganda is bombastic, but Super Earth’s citizens sincerely believe its claims, including that Managed Democracy is ideal and that dying for Super Earth is right.

That contrast makes the spokesperson more than a generic heroic announcer. His earnest sales pitch and over-the-top delivery embody a society that treats propaganda as truth. PC Gamer’s report on Nickel’s casting account and GamesRadar+’s coverage of the performance describe the role’s comic and satirical intent.

No. The name began with the community. Game director Mikael Eriksson later called him “our John Helldiver character – named by the community,” and Arrowhead subsequently used the name in its own references. The origin is therefore a collaboration in two stages: the studio created and cast the cinematic character, while players supplied the name that stuck. GamesRadar+ reported on the community name becoming part of Arrowhead’s usage.
