A Nintendo lawsuit is not supported as the cause: Nintendo denied the rumor, and Nguyen said the decision was unrelated to legal issues.
Why did Flappy Bird get removed?
Nguyen said he had made Flappy Bird for short, relaxed play, but it had become an addictive product and a problem in his view. In a February 11, 2014 interview with Forbes, quoted by TIME, he explained: “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed,” then added, “But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”
His explanation was about the effect he believed the game was having on players—not a clinical finding that the game caused addiction in a measured population. The evidence for the motive is Nguyen’s own account of his concern and his decision.
Did Nintendo sue the creator of Flappy Bird?
No. The available contemporaneous reporting does not support a Nintendo lawsuit or takedown demand as the reason the game disappeared. Nguyen said the removal was unrelated to legal issues, and Nintendo denied the speculation. The Guardian quoted Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa as saying: “While we usually do not comment on the rumours and speculations, we have already denied the speculation.” The Guardian’s February 11, 2014 report also noted that the game’s resemblance to Mario pipes had fueled rumors.

That visual resemblance helps explain why people suspected Nintendo, but it does not establish a legal challenge. Nguyen also described a simple tap-to-fly mechanism and childhood game influences when discussing how he designed Flappy Bird; neither point changes the reason he gave for removing it.
When was Flappy Bird removed?
Nguyen announced he would take the game down and gave 24 hours’ notice before it was removed from sale in February 2014, according to The Guardian’s contemporaneous report. The removal followed his announcement; the stated reason was his concern about players’ overuse, not a documented Nintendo action.

Was popularity the reason?
Nguyen had expressed discomfort with the attention and coverage around Flappy Bird, but that is context rather than the clearest reason he gave for removing it. In his direct explanation to The Washington Post, he identified a negative effect on players and unexpected addiction. Popularity alone, or a desire to escape publicity, should not be substituted for that stated rationale.

The February 2014 reports establish that the game was removed from Apple and Google app stores at that time; they do not establish its current availability. They also do not support treating any later listing or a phone advertised with the game installed as an official current download. Check the relevant official storefront for present-day availability rather than relying on old coverage or resale listings.
