After every graphics change, let shaders recompile before judging the result: Gearbox says compilation takes about 10 minutes on most PCs and recommends playing for at least 15 minutes before comparing performance. The steps below apply to PC; they do not cover console settings.
Start with your PC’s performance target
Borderlands Support lists minimum PC specifications for 1080p at 30 FPS on Low and recommended specifications for 1440p at 60 FPS on Medium. These are expected targets, not guarantees: performance varies by scene and system. If your PC is below the minimum specification, settings changes may help, but the published target does not promise a particular frame rate.
Check Borderlands 4 PC specifications before tuning so you have a realistic starting point.
Try these quick FPS improvements in order

Install the current graphics driver
Use the latest driver available from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel for your graphics card. The Borderlands Support guide includes an NVIDIA driver example, but that version is dated guidance; check your vendor’s live driver page rather than treating the example as current. The support guide also links optimal-settings charts for selected cards and resolutions, but does not establish one best preset for every PC.

Enable upscaling and test image quality
Open Options > Visuals > Advanced > Resolution Scaling and choose the supported method for your system: NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, Epic TSR, or Intel XeSS. Borderlands Support recommends Upscaling Quality: Performance and Frame Generation: On as starting points. Try them, then assess frame rate, image clarity, and responsiveness on your own PC; the best choice depends on your GPU, resolution, and preferences.

Reduce costly visual effects
If performance is still too low, try turning off shadows, volumetric clouds, or fog. Those toggles were added in the December 2025 update. Change one setting at a time and compare in the same scene or similar gameplay conditions so you can tell what helped.

Let shaders recompile before comparing
Graphics-setting changes trigger shader recompilation. Gearbox estimates this takes about 10 minutes on most PCs and recommends playing for at least 15 minutes before deciding whether performance has changed. If compilation takes exceptionally long, Borderlands Support suggests restarting the game and system; clearing the shader cache is another option.
Measure changes without mistaking shader stutter for a result
For a useful comparison, keep the resolution and gameplay conditions consistent, change one option at a time, and wait through shader compilation after each graphics adjustment. Compare both frame rate and how smooth the game feels; an upscaling or frame-generation setting that raises displayed FPS may not be the best fit if its image quality or responsiveness is unsatisfactory.

Gearbox reported that its December 11, 2025 update delivered measured framerate improvements of 9% to 20% on minimum-spec and recommended-spec PC hardware. The studio attributed the work to a range of changes, including UI and CPU efficiency, fewer shader and PSO hitches, foliage and GPU optimizations, Lumen work, memory use, and additional graphics controls. In a later PC performance update, Gearbox said average FPS had improved by approximately 20% across PC specifications since launch, with better 1% and 0.1% lows and reduced hitching. These are developer-reported results across hardware classes, not a forecast of the gain on an individual PC.

If FPS remains poor or the game is unstable
- Disable overlays: Borderlands Support says Steam and other overlays can contribute to performance issues or crashes. Turn them off and check whether the problem changes.
- Verify game files: Use your platform’s file-verification option if files may be missing or corrupted.
- Check for CPU instability: The support guide flags Intel 13th- and 14th-generation CPU instability as a possible cause of slowdowns, crashes, overheating, or unusually high CPU usage. If those symptoms apply, follow the guidance in the official support article.
