Speak to Chiko before approaching Keipo: going to Keipo first can cost you access to most of the quest’s reported rewards. The quest leads to the Sand Sea Ruins, where you can find the Heart of the Leviathan—and an optional journal that changes the context of the final conversation.
Spoilers: The route below reveals the quest’s story, optional discovery, choices, and reported rewards.
Start Heart of Valor with Chiko
- Travel to Thirdborn in Shatterscarp and find Chiko in the Residential District.
- Speak with Chiko to start Heart of Valor and receive directions to Keipo, who lives nearby.
- Only after speaking with Chiko, go talk to Keipo. Approaching Keipo first can prevent you from obtaining most of the quest’s reported rewards.
Once you have spoken with both characters, head to the Sand Sea Ruins to look for the Heart of the Leviathan.
Reach the Heart of the Leviathan in the Sand Sea Ruins
The main entrance to the ruins is locked. Instead of trying to open it, follow the exterior stairs and elevated structure to reach another entrance. From there, work your way down through the ruins, dealing with enemies and traversal obstacles as you go. Switches and levers open the route through the complex toward the heart.
#1 Best Overall
- Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger.
- Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
- Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem
- Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way
- Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities.
The walkthroughs describe the route by landmarks rather than a complete written coordinate list, so use the stairs and elevated structure to locate the alternate entrance, then follow the ruin’s descending path and mechanisms.
Optional exploration and loot
If you want to explore before taking the heart, VULKK’s route calls out chests, a Wael Totem Fragment, Umpara’s Promise, and other loot along the way. These are optional detours; the key objective is to reach the heart. Consider clearing side areas before taking it and leaving the ruins.

Find Keipo’s Weathered Journal
After taking the Heart of the Leviathan, inspect the nearby structure for a button or switch that opens a concealed room. Inside, you can read Keipo’s Weathered Journal. It reveals the truth behind Keipo’s account of the leviathan encounter and his connection to Umpara, giving you more context for the conversation ahead.
Chiko appears near the exit and asks you not to give Keipo the heart. The journal informs the later dialogue and secret-related choice, but the reported outcomes depend on how you handle the conversations; finding it alone does not guarantee a particular reward.

Should you give Keipo the Heart of the Leviathan?
There is no single best choice: the outcome depends on the story you want and whether you prefer Umpara’s Spear, Stormdancer equipment, or keeping the heart. The following rewards and branches are reported by walkthrough guides, not guaranteed for every combination of dialogue choices.
| Choice or route | Reported result or reward | Condition or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Give the heart to Keipo | Umpara’s Spear | Game8 reports this outcome for giving Keipo the heart. Neoseeker and VULKK describe an Umpara’s Spear +1 outcome under some dialogue conditions, so the upgrade is not established as automatic. |
| Refuse Keipo and follow the later Chiko/Hajime path | Stormdancer equipment | Game8 reports this route can yield Stormdancer equipment. A dialogue response can end the quest without that equipment. |
| Keep the heart | The heart can be retained as a trinket with an attack-damage benefit and health drain | Game8 reports this effect; the available walkthrough descriptions do not establish the precise effect values here. |
| Find the journal and address Keipo’s secret | Changes the context of the secret-related dialogue | Guides report additional choices about exposing or keeping Keipo’s secret. Outcomes depend on the dialogue branch; finding the journal by itself does not establish a specific reward. |
| Tell Chiko and Tira Nui Hajime about Keipo’s condition | Additional dialogue decision | Game8 identifies this as a separate choice. The available descriptions do not establish a guaranteed reward for making this disclosure. |
On the return trip, choose your response to Keipo, then follow the related conversations with Chiko and, where relevant, Tira Nui Hajime. Pay attention to dialogue about Keipo’s condition and secret: one response can close the quest without the Stormdancer equipment. The guides differ in how specifically they describe the spear outcome, so treat the +1 version as conditional rather than a sure result.
