Hearthstone “Your account needs to be updated” Error: What to Do

Blizzard advised restarting Hearthstone for a documented occurrence of this prompt. If it persists, check for updates and try PC Scan and Repair, while keeping in mind that player-reported fixes have mixed results.

If Hearthstone says “Your account needs to be updated. Please restart the game,” click OK and restart the client once. Blizzard recommended that for a resolved occurrence of the message. If it returns, check for a game update; on PC, Scan and Repair is another step some players said helped, though reports show it does not work for everyone.

The message has appeared in several separate incidents, but available reports do not establish that it is affecting many players now or identify one cause for every occurrence. The error alone does not show that your account is compromised, banned, or needs personal details changed.

What the error means—and what is known about its status

The wording is not a reliable diagnosis of a problem with your account details. Blizzard has documented the restart prompt as a resolved issue, and a separate 2022 login problem showed that a game patch could trigger a similar message. Later player reports describe mixed causes and outcomes.

Blizzard’s known-issues post described its incident as affecting “a few players,” without giving a count, and said restarting the client should remove the prompt. That guidance applies to the occurrence Blizzard documented; it is not a guarantee for every appearance. Blizzard’s known-issues post

As of October 8, 2026, the available evidence does not confirm that the issue is currently widespread. A March 2026 community discussion includes reports of the same wording during a broader release-day disruption, but it cannot establish prevalence, cause, or current service status. Try these steps in order

  1. Dismiss the message and restart Hearthstone. Click OK, close the client, then launch it again. This is Blizzard’s guidance for its documented resolved incident. Blizzard’s known-issues post
  2. Check for a pending game update. Open the official launcher or your platform’s app store and install any available Hearthstone update before trying again. This is a sensible check, not a confirmed fix for every case: a separate May 2022 episode followed patch 23.2, and Blizzard said a desktop update released May 11 fixed that login-blocking bug. Blizzard’s May 2022 issue thread
  3. If you play on PC and the prompt persists, consider Scan and Repair in Battle.net. Some players in March 2025 said it helped; others reported that repair or restarting did not resolve the issue. Treat it as a troubleshooting attempt, not a verified universal solution. March 2025 player reports
  4. If none of those steps works, contact Blizzard Support. Include your platform, region, Hearthstone version, the exact message, and when the problem began so support has useful context. The available reports do not establish a particular response time.

What player reports can—and cannot—tell you

March 2025 reports include several different explanations: Scan and Repair helped some players, while another said their account began working after a previously unawarded February season reward was accounted for. Other users said repair or restart did not help. These are individual accounts, not confirmation of a single cause or fix. March 2025 player reports

The March 2026 posts likewise describe varied access, platform, and region experiences during a release-day disruption. Community discussions can show that players encountered the wording, but they do not measure how many were affected or prove that the underlying problem was the same as in earlier incidents. What not to infer from the prompt

  • Do not assume the message means your account was compromised or banned; the cited incidents do not support that conclusion.
  • Do not change personal account details solely because of this prompt.
  • Avoid deleting game or launcher data based only on forum anecdotes. The evidence here does not establish that as a safe or effective fix.
  • There is no supported reason to buy hardware or use a third-party repair utility for this error. The documented incidents concern game updates, game or account state, or service disruption.
