The best-selling video game in the U.S. in 2014 was Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The ranked list below is the U.S. annual retail ranking by units sold, reproduced in the Entertainment Software Association’s 2015 Essential Facts report and attributed to The NPD Group/Retail Tracking Service. It is not a worldwide or all-format ranking.

Why the ranking depends on geography and coverage
This is specifically a U.S. retail chart. Contemporary UK reporting listed a different order: FIFA 15 led the UK top ten, followed by Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The Guardian said the U.S. and UK figures it discussed were based on physical retail sales and excluded digital downloads, so neither list should be treated as an all-format global ranking. Activision separately said Advanced Warfare was the top-selling console game globally in 2014. Its January 2015 statement relied on physical game sell-through data from NPD, GfK, and Activision internal estimates, a broader and different basis than the ESA’s U.S. NPD-derived title ranking. It does not turn the U.S. list above into a harmonized worldwide chart. Activision’s January 16, 2015 release.
What the chart says about 2014 sales
Action games made up 28.2% of U.S. video-game units sold in 2014, while shooters accounted for 21.7%, according to The NPD Group/Retail Tracking Service figures reproduced in the ESA’s 2015 report. Those are genre-wide shares; they are not the share of sales represented by any title in this top ten. ESA, 2015 Essential Facts.

Other charts may differ because they count platform editions separately or use another geography, sales measure, or data coverage. For example, VGChartz’s global annual retail chart lists Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire first, while its U.S. chart counts platform-specific editions separately. Those figures and ranks belong to a separate chart series and should not be combined with the ESA/NPD title-level ranking. VGChartz global 2014 chart and VGChartz U.S. 2014 chart.
