For better navigation in Helldivers 2, check the mission mini-map as you move: use it to orient around the current objective, then look for nearby points of interest and useful materials. Decide whether to detour based on the mission’s urgency and what your squad needs. The ship’s Galactic Map is different—it shows the wider war, not the local battlefield.
Use the mission mini-map to get your bearings
At the start of a mission, check the mini-map to understand where you are in relation to the objective and nearby terrain. Xbox Wire recommends using it to survey your surroundings, identify enemy nests and tactical objectives, and look for points of interest and useful materials (Xbox Wire’s Helldivers 2 guide, August 26, 2025).

Rather than checking only once, take brief looks while moving. Reorient toward the current objective, then scan what lies close enough to be worth investigating. This keeps exploration connected to the mission instead of turning every map check into an open-ended search.
Controls can differ by platform and player settings, and the official guides cited here do not provide a complete, current cross-platform control reference. Check your in-game controls for how to open the mini-map and use its functions.

Choose detours by weighing their value against the mission
Optional exploration can turn up materials and other resources. Xbox Wire notes that samples can be found at plants and sample nodes, while Requisition Slips may be found in containers, bunkers, or pods. The guide does not give a guaranteed yield, so treat these as places to check—not guaranteed rewards.
Before leaving the objective route, consider whether the detour serves your squad:

- Mission urgency: If completing the current objective is the priority, avoid letting optional searches pull the squad too far away.
- Squad needs: A nearby point of interest may be worth a look if its possible resources matter to your group.
- Current condition: Factor in how well the squad is doing and whether it can afford to spend time away from the main task.
There is no established time-to-reward calculation for these detours. Make the call based on the mission in front of you, rather than assuming every point of interest is worth pursuing.
Adapt your route to the operation
Do not assume every mission has the same layout or a universal best route. Arrowhead Game Studios’ 7.0.0 update notes describe the Void biome as having several randomized primary objectives per operation. That is one documented example of mission structure varying; use the objectives shown in your operation to guide your route, and adjust as you learn what the mission requires.

Keep the Galactic Map and mini-map in their roles
The Galactic Map aboard your ship is the strategic view: PlayStation describes it as charting the progress of military efforts. The mission mini-map is the tool for surveying your local surroundings. Use the first to understand the broader war and the second to navigate the battlefield (PlayStation’s Helldivers 2 beginner’s guide; Xbox Wire).
