Sony’s proposed PlayStation Network account requirement for Helldivers 2 on Steam triggered a sharp backlash in May 2024. The game had launched with account linking optional, and the change threatened to lock out players in places where PSN registration was unavailable. Sony reversed the plan on May 6—but that did not immediately restore the game’s Steam listing in every affected region.
Why did Sony announce a PSN requirement for Helldivers 2?
When Helldivers 2 launched on Steam, account linking was supposed to be required, but technical issues led Sony to make it temporarily optional. On May 3, 2024, the game’s Steam FAQ said that grace period was ending and that the requirement would return. Sony’s FAQ described it as reinstating the linking requirement after the launch issue had been resolved.
The announced schedule was staggered: new Steam players would begin seeing the linking process on May 6; existing players would begin seeing mandatory login on May 30 and face a June 4 deadline. Sony said linking would connect players to support systems for reporting bad actors, bans and appeals, with the goal of making the game safer.
Why did the change provoke such a strong reaction?
Players saw a late change to the deal
For players who had bought and played the Steam version without linking accounts, the announcement felt like a new condition imposed after launch. The FAQ’s own anticipated question captured the issue: “Why do I need a PlayStation Network account now? I didn’t when the game launched on Steam.” The concern was not simply having another login; it was being told that access would depend on a service that had not been required in practice when many players started playing.

PSN was not available everywhere the game had been sold
The requirement also had a regional consequence. PSN registration required users to register in their country or territory of residence, but PSN was unavailable in some regions where Helldivers 2 had been sold on Steam. For players there, linking was not a routine account step: the policy risked making continued play impossible. That made the timing and the choice of account policy more consequential than an ordinary platform login prompt.
How the arguments differed
- Sony’s stated case: account linking would support moderation, reports, bans and appeals.
- Players’ objection: the requirement was being enforced after launch, despite linking having remained optional, and some players could not register for PSN where they lived.
- The trust issue: even if the safety rationale was genuine, the late notice left players questioning whether the terms under which they bought the game had changed.
What changed over the weekend?
On May 6, Sony announced that the planned update would not move forward. The reversal said the update requiring linking for new players and, from May 30, existing players “will not be moving forward,” and acknowledged that player feedback had been valuable.

Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt thanked PlayStation for leaving linking optional and accepted responsibility for the launch communication, saying: “I did not ensure players were aware of the requirement and we didn’t talk about it enough.” His comments, reported by Ars Technica, reflected both the company’s reversal and Arrowhead’s part in how the expectation had been set.
Why the Steam delisting was a separate problem
Rolling back the account requirement did not automatically restore sales in regions where PSN was unavailable. On May 9, PC Gamer reported that the game remained delisted from Steam in 177 countries and territories not served by PSN. That is a historical figure reported at the time, not a current count of blocked regions. Pilestedt said he was speaking with PlayStation and Valve and pushing to undo the delisting, adding that he wanted the game available everywhere. The distinction matters: Sony’s May 6 decision addressed whether Steam players would have to link PSN accounts. Storefront availability was a separate issue involving where the game could be bought. An account-policy reversal did not, by itself, put the game back on sale in every region where it had been delisted.
How big was the game when this happened?
The stakes were heightened by Helldivers 2’s rapid success. Sony’s 2024 investor presentation identifies the live-service game as released on PS5 and PC on February 8, 2024, and reports more than 12 million units in sell-through as of May 5, 2024, across PS5 and PC. That figure is neither a current player count nor a Steam-only sales total. Sony’s presentation provides the platform and date context.

Did Sony destroy or save Helldivers 2?
Neither description is quite right. The announced requirement created a serious trust and access crisis: it arrived after launch, and the mismatch between Steam’s sales reach and PSN’s regional availability made the consequences unequal. Sony’s reversal prevented the planned mandatory linking policy from taking effect as announced. But calling that a complete fix overlooks the separate Steam delisting that was still being reported days later.
The episode was a short-lived policy crisis with lasting lessons for platform launches: disclose account requirements clearly before sale, account for regional service availability, and treat a rollback of one policy as distinct from resolving every consequence around it.

Present-day platform note
Arrowhead Player Support’s FAQ, updated October 7, 2026, says Helldivers 2 supports cross-play between PC, PlayStation and Xbox, but not cross-buy or cross-save/cross-progression. Linking Steam and PSN does not transfer game data between PS5 and PC. Arrowhead’s platform progression FAQ covers those current distinctions.
