If the Honkai: Star Rail launcher won’t start, first identify what is actually failing: HoYoPlay itself, the game after you click Start, a missing installation, or an update that fails while extracting files. Note the exact error message or code and when it appears; the right fix depends on that distinction.
Start with the symptom you see
HoYoverse’s guidance separates general HoYoPlay problems from the game failing to launch, missing local files, and specific error codes. Use this quick match before changing settings:
- HoYoPlay won’t open, crashes, or shows a general error: try the reversible launcher checks below.
- HoYoPlay opens, but the game won’t launch from the launcher or desktop shortcut: use the Windows system-locale procedure.
- HoYoPlay says “Local game not found”: point it to the installed game folder.
- An update or extraction fails, especially with error 2002-0-0: follow that error’s separate CPU or repair-tool steps.
- A different error code appears: use the matching code-specific instructions rather than guessing at the cause.

If HoYoPlay itself will not open or shows a general error
HoYoverse’s general launcher guidance recommends starting with simple checks and escalating only if the issue remains. Try these in order:

- Restart the computer. This can clear a stuck launcher or game process.
- Close memory-heavy background apps. Then try opening HoYoPlay again.
- Open HoYoPlay directly and check for updates. Do this if the launcher window can be opened.
- Select “Repair Now” in HoYoPlay and let the repair finish before launching again.
- Reinstall HoYoPlay if the earlier steps do not resolve a general launcher problem. Use an official HoYoverse download source.
These are HoYoverse’s initial general steps for launcher errors, in its general HoYoPlay troubleshooting article, updated September 17, 2025. They are not a substitute for a code-specific fix when an exact error is shown.
If the game will not launch after you click Start
If HoYoPlay opens normally but Honkai: Star Rail does not start from HoYoPlay or its desktop shortcut, HoYoverse suggests changing a Windows system-locale option. This is a targeted procedure for that symptom, not a universal fix for every startup failure.
- Open Windows Region settings.
- Go to Additional date, time, & regional settings.
- Open Change date, time, or number formats.
- Select the Administrative tab, then choose Change system locale.
- Check Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support, confirm the change, and restart the computer.
- Open HoYoPlay and try launching the game again.

If HoYoPlay says “Local game not found”
This message can mean HoYoPlay is not pointed at the folder containing the installed game. In HoYoPlay, open the menu, select Installation Location, and manually choose the actual game directory.
For example, if the installation is at F:SRHonkaiStar Rail, select the HonkaiStar Rail folder. Do not select only the drive or an unrelated parent folder. HoYoverse gives this example in its Local game not found instructions, updated October 23, 2025.
If an update fails to extract or shows error 2002-0-0
HoYoverse treats error 2002-0-0 as a distinct extraction problem with different steps depending on whether the CPU is overclocked. Do not apply this branch to unrelated launcher errors.

For an overclocked CPU
HoYoverse suggests temporarily lowering the CPU frequency, restarting the computer, and launching again from HoYoPlay. Its examples include overclocked Intel 13th- and 14th-generation Core K-series i7 and i9 processors. Processor settings vary by motherboard; if you are unsure how to change them safely, get help from someone familiar with your system rather than experimenting in BIOS.
For a CPU that is not overclocked
- Restart the computer.
- Download HoYoverse’s dedicated repair tool from its error 2002-0-0 guide, then extract the downloaded tool.
- Run the tool’s executable extraction check.
- Relaunch Honkai: Star Rail from HoYoPlay.
If extraction still fails, HoYoverse’s common error-code guidance says to repeat the repair check or try installing/updating on a different hard drive. Contact HoYoverse support if the error persists.

Consult HoYoverse’s full common error-code article for the matching steps. It also lists registry deletion for code 2000_0; do not use that instruction for an unspecified launcher failure or a different code.
If downloading or updating prevents startup
For download or update trouble that is not specifically error 2002-0-0, HoYoverse recommends checking the connection and available storage, using HoYoPlay’s Repair Now function, restarting the device, and reinstalling from an official source if the problem continues. Its download and update troubleshooting page, updated September 30, 2025, also asks users contacting support to provide their device model, operating-system version, a screenshot or recording, the time the problem occurred, and their region.
HoYoPlay black screen after upgrading to Windows 11
HoYoverse documents a specific black-screen case after a Windows 11 upgrade. Its procedure is scoped to that situation; do not download replacement launcher files from third-party sites or assume this fix applies to other black screens.

cef_109.zipfile linked from HoYoverse’s Windows 11 black-screen instructions, updated October 8, 2025. - Extract the archive, then copy its contents into the HoYoPlay installation folder. The article’s example folder is
HoYoverse Launcher1.3.3.182. - Replace existing files when prompted, then relaunch HoYoPlay.
What to send HoYoverse support
If the matching official steps do not resolve the problem, collect the details HoYoverse requests for launcher escalation:
- A screenshot or video of the failure and the exact error text or code.
dxdiag.txt.- The date and time the issue first occurred.
- The name of your antivirus or other security software.
- The HoYoPlay client log, uploaded from the launcher’s About tab.
- Launcher diagnostic information, available by clicking the version number ten times in Settings.
- Your ISP name and the result from HoYoverse’s internet detector.
These escalation details come from HoYoverse’s general launcher support article. Keep the original error visible in your report so support can distinguish a launcher crash from a game, installation, or update failure.
