Those copies can be managed separately, so deleting one does not always erase the other. Before confirming, check the game, player profile, and storage location.
Before deleting a save
A save may exist on your console or computer, in cloud storage, or—on PS4—in USB storage. Removing one copy may leave another that can later be restored or synced. If you might want the progress again, make a supported backup first and verify exactly which copy the menu is set to delete.
- Confirm the correct game and user or profile.
- Check whether the selected location is local storage, cloud storage, or USB.
- Read the final confirmation prompt carefully. Cloud behavior and sync timing can vary by platform and game.
Delete saves on PS5
PlayStation manages saved data separately from game and app installations. Deleting a game does not, by itself, delete its save.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), matching the game’s version.
- Select Console Storage, then choose Delete and select the save data to remove.
- Review the selection and confirm.
PlayStation’s saved-data options distinguish PS5 from PS4 saves. Its documented USB copying instructions apply to PS4 saved data; the cited guidance does not establish USB backup steps for PS5 game saves. PlayStation’s PS5 saved-data and storage guidance.

Delete saves on PS4
PS4 lets you choose among system, online, and USB storage. Take care to select the intended location: deleting a file in one place does not necessarily remove copies elsewhere.
- Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management.
- Choose System Storage, Online Storage, or USB Storage Device.
- Select Delete, then choose the game and the file or files to remove. Use Select All only if you intend to remove every listed save in that selection.
- Select Delete again and confirm.
To preserve a backup, PlayStation’s procedure also supports copying saved data from system storage to USB storage and copying it back. A USB device is optional; it is not needed to delete a save. Follow PlayStation’s PS4 saved-data instructions.
Delete saves on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Nintendo’s local save-data deletion steps apply to Switch and Switch 2. Save data is stored in the console’s internal memory and cannot be moved to a microSD card.

- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management > Delete Save Data.
- Enter the Parental Controls PIN if prompted.
- Choose the game.
- Select the save for a particular user, or choose Delete Save Data for this Software to delete save data for all users.
- Check the game and scope, then confirm.
Nintendo warns: “Once deleted, save data cannot be recovered.” See Nintendo’s local save-data deletion instructions.
Delete a Nintendo Switch cloud backup
Deleting a cloud backup is a separate action from deleting the console’s local save. Nintendo says removing backed-up data from its server means it cannot be downloaded to a Switch console, but this does not affect save data already on the console.
- Open the game’s Save Data Cloud details, or go to System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the relevant user and software, then use the option to delete its backed-up data.
- Review the selection and confirm only if you intend to remove the server copy.

Delete or manage saves in Steam
There is no single save-file location or deletion procedure that works for every Steam game. Games may use Steam Cloud for different data—including saves, settings, and profile information—and the game’s implementation affects which controls are available. Valve’s documentation describes game APIs that can enumerate, read, delete, or write cloud files; it does not provide one universal player-facing reset path.
If you disable Steam Cloud for a game, progress that would normally be saved to the cloud is saved locally on the machine where that progress was made. Disabling cloud sync is not the same as deleting an existing cloud copy.

- Do not delete files based on a generic Windows or macOS save-location guide; locations and cloud behavior vary by game.
- Check the game’s own settings or support instructions for its supported save-reset method.

Xbox save deletion
Current official Xbox instructions for deleting saved game data, including how to remove a save everywhere rather than only from a local console, could not be verified from an accessible procedural support page. Because local and cloud deletion have different consequences, avoid relying on an unverified menu path when choosing between them.
