Grand Theftendo was Brian Provinciano’s unofficial NES homebrew demake of Grand Theft Auto III, begun in 2002 for original NES hardware. It was not a licensed Nintendo or Rockstar game. The project’s ideas later developed into Retro City Rampage, an original game rather than a GTA adaptation.

What was Grand Theftendo?

Grand Theftendo was an attempt to reinterpret Grand Theft Auto III as an 8-bit game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Contemporary coverage described it as a homebrew project developed by Provinciano himself and running on original NES hardware—not an official GTA release or a commercial Nintendo product. “Demake” is more precise than “port”: the project translated the premise and feel of a modern 3D open-world game into a very different system, rather than reproducing the original game as-is.

Development began at the end of 2002, according to a 2011 Nintendo World Report press release. The project attracted attention in 2004 and 2005, when it was described in contemporary coverage as a homebrew GTA III project.

How did GTA III fit on NES hardware?

Make:’s May 20, 2005 account reported a 256×240 display, 2-bit colour and palette, a 1.79 MHz system, and code written entirely in 6502 assembly language. These are specifications reported by Make:, not measurements independently verified here. They convey the scale of the challenge: the project had to evoke an open-world game within the NES’s limited processing, memory, and visual capabilities.

According to Nintendo World Report’s 2011 account of Provinciano’s GDC talk, he built custom NES development hardware and software, as well as tools to make coding and map design easier. The work involved practical constraints around memory, speed, and debugging. The same account says the project moved from NES to PC during its development, as its scope and direction changed.

How did Grand Theftendo become Retro City Rampage?

The project did not remain a GTA adaptation. In the development history summarized by Nintendo World Report, Provinciano shifted toward an original game, removed the GTA content, and created original scenarios and material. Those ideas evolved into Retro City Rampage. A 2011 press release described Grand Theftendo as a precursor to that game and announced that it would be presented at the Independent Games Summit at GDC.

The broader evolution took more than seven years, according to Nintendo World Report’s 2011 account. That span refers to the development history leading toward Retro City Rampage; it does not mean Grand Theftendo was a finished NES game for seven years or that it was commercially released.

Can you download or buy Grand Theftendo?

The historical accounts cited here do not establish whether Grand Theftendo was released later, whether an official ROM is currently available, or whether a legitimate physical cartridge can be obtained. A 2011 press release called it “unreleased,” but that historical description does not settle its availability today. Treat claims of an official download or commercial cartridge as unverified unless they can be confirmed by a current, authoritative source.
