A standard NeoForge server’s documented content folder is mods, for NeoForge mods—not Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugins. If you mean mods, install them in the server’s mods folder. If you need Bukkit-family plugins as well, use compatible hybrid server software such as Magma and follow its plugin instructions.
First, identify what you mean by “plugin”
NeoForge’s official server guide documents a route for installing mods, but not a native Bukkit-family plugin installation path. A Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugin is not a NeoForge mod, so copying a plugin JAR into mods does not follow NeoForge’s documented installation method. See the NeoForge server guide.
- Need NeoForge mods only: use a standard NeoForge server and its
modsfolder. - Need Bukkit-family plugins too: consider compatible hybrid server software, such as Magma, and check version and API support before switching.
How to install NeoForge mods on a dedicated server
- Run the NeoForge installer with the server-install option:
java -jar /path/to/neoforge-installer.jar --installServer. Replace the example path with the actual installer location. See the NeoForge server installation instructions. - Start the server once to let it create its folders, then stop it.
- Place the mod JAR files in the server’s
modsfolder. Use trusted download sources and confirm that each mod supports both the Minecraft version and NeoForge version your server runs. NeoForge’s guide describes this folder procedure for mods, not Bukkit plugins (NeoForge server guide). - Back up the world before updating NeoForge or any mods. The installation guide includes this precaution (NeoForge server installation instructions).
How to add Bukkit-family plugins with Magma
Magma describes itself as hybrid server software for running NeoForge mods and Bukkit-family plugins together. Its documented plugin procedure is separate from NeoForge’s mods folder workflow (Magma guide).
- Check that the Magma build supports your Minecraft version and that your required mods and plugins support the same version and APIs.
- Stop the Magma server.
- Place the plugin JAR in the server’s
pluginsfolder. - Restart the server. Magma’s guide names Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins, but compatibility is not guaranteed: a plugin can fail if it depends on an unsupported API or missing dependencies (Magma plugin guide; Magma compatibility guidance).
Check Magma’s version and stability before switching
Hybrid support is build-specific, not a blanket promise that every NeoForge mod and Bukkit-family plugin will work together. Magma’s downloads page lists a Minecraft 1.21.1 line as early development and warns of possible stability issues (Magma downloads). Check the current release status for your target Minecraft version, test your required mods and plugins together, and avoid migrating a production world without a backup.
