Turn on the handheld and check its power indicator to see how much charge remains. Check the separate orange or amber recharge light to see whether it is charging. The colors vary by model: a DS Lite uses green for charge and red for low, while a DSi or DSi XL uses blue for full, red for low, and blinking red for very low or no charge.
Check the battery level by model
The power indicator reports remaining charge; it is not the same light as the recharge indicator. Nintendo’s guidance differs across the DS family, so identify your model before interpreting the color.
Nintendo DS Lite
- Green power light: the battery has charge.
- Red power light: the battery is low. Save your game promptly and recharge.

Nintendo DSi and DSi XL
- Blue power light: the battery is full.
- Red power light: the battery is low. Nintendo says the indicator changes from blue to red at around 30% remaining.
- Blinking red power light: the battery is very low or has no charge.
These indicators are documented in Nintendo’s Nintendo DSi manual and power-light support page.

Original Nintendo DS
The guidance cited here does not establish the original DS power-light colors. Check the manual for your specific system rather than assuming the DS Lite or DSi color meanings apply.
Check whether the system is charging
Connect the AC adapter made for your model. The orange or amber recharge indicator lights while charging and goes out when charging is complete. This light reports charging activity, not the current battery level while the system is unplugged.

Nintendo estimates a full charge takes four hours for the original Nintendo DS and about three hours for DS Lite. Playing while connected to the adapter makes charging take longer. These are approximate manufacturer times, not a battery-health test. Nintendo charging guidance
If the DSi or DSi XL recharge light blinks
A blinking orange recharge light can mean the battery is not installed properly. Turn the system off, check that the battery is seated correctly, and make sure it is the appropriate licensed battery for the console. Nintendo specifies TWL-003 for DSi and UTL-003 for DSi XL. What runtime can tell you—and what it cannot
A short play session does not by itself prove the battery is failing. Brightness and the game being played affect battery life, and Nintendo’s published times are estimates rather than guaranteed durations or a diagnostic threshold.

When to check or replace the battery
If runtime has become unusually short, first consider whether brightness or the game has changed. If you do replace a battery, match it to the exact console model; DSi and DSi XL packs are not interchangeable according to Nintendo’s listed model numbers.
For DS or DS Lite, Nintendo’s replacement guidance says to turn off the system, disconnect the AC adapter, remove the battery cover with a small Phillips screwdriver, and follow the battery pack’s disposal instructions. Nintendo also says DS and DS Lite batteries can be fully recharged at least 500 times before long-term use begins to reduce performance. That general cycle guidance is not a way to measure how much life remains in an individual battery. Nintendo DS charging guidance
