How Do I Import a Forge Modpack in CurseForge?

Use CurseForge’s Import option for an exported profile ZIP or a time-limited profile code. A ZIP of loose mod files is not an importable profile.

To import a privately shared Forge modpack in the CurseForge app, choose Import, select Import Profile .zip, then pick the pack’s exported profile ZIP. A regular ZIP containing only mod files will not import as a profile.

Choose the right way to get the modpack

The steps depend on how you received the pack:

What you have Use this workflow
A modpack listed publicly on CurseForge Install it from the CurseForge app’s Browse/Discover area or use the listing’s website Install flow. CurseForge explains the public modpack installation options.
A privately shared exported profile ZIP Use the app’s Import option and select the exported profile archive.
A profile code Use the code option in the Import flow. CurseForge says codes are valid for seven days. See CurseForge’s sharing instructions.

Import an exported Forge profile ZIP

  1. Open the CurseForge app and select Minecraft.
  2. Click Import.
  3. Choose Import Profile .zip.
  4. Select the exported modpack/profile ZIP you received.
  5. Wait for CurseForge to create the profile. It should appear as a new profile under Minecraft.

CurseForge’s import feature accepts ZIP files in its recognized profile format; the extension alone does not make an archive importable. CurseForge’s custom-profile guide says a zipped folder of mods cannot be imported as a profile.

Import with a profile code

  1. Open CurseForge and go to Minecraft.
  2. Click Import and choose the profile-code option.
  3. Enter the code shared by the pack’s creator and submit it.

Use the code within seven days of its creation; if it has expired, ask the creator for a fresh code or an exported profile ZIP. CurseForge’s support guide gives the validity period.

Fix an “Invalid file” error

Start by checking that you selected the exported profile ZIP—not a generic archive containing downloaded mod files. CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance identifies manifest.json as a required part of a valid import archive. Check its import and sharing guidance and Minecraft troubleshooting instructions.

  1. Open the ZIP with your archive utility and confirm that manifest.json is inside the archive, rather than only present in a folder outside it.
  2. If the archive has the expected structure, use CurseForge’s Repair Installation option, then try importing again.
  3. If it still fails, ask the person who shared the pack to export the profile again and send the resulting ZIP or a new profile code.

Check Forge and Minecraft version compatibility

After the profile imports, confirm it uses the intended Minecraft version and Forge loader. CurseForge notes that modloader and Minecraft version must match for a profile’s mods to be compatible; Forge profiles are for Forge-compatible mods. Read CurseForge’s mod loader guidance.

If a pack was built for a different Minecraft version or loader, changing only the profile’s label will not make its mods compatible. Use the exact Minecraft version and Forge setup specified by the pack creator.
