Operator status is broad access to commands; it is different from an allowlist, which controls who can join.
Grant operator status on Java Edition
- Open the server console, or join as an account that already has authority to run operator commands.
- Run
/op <playername>, replacing<playername>with the player’s in-game name. Minecraft’s official command guide identifies/opas the multiplayer command for making a player an operator. - Have the player retry the command they need. If it does not work, check the spelling of the account name and whether the command is available on your server version.
Do not confuse dedicated-server operator permissions with single-player cheats. The official guide treats those as separate settings; enabling cheats in a single-player world is not the step for granting a player access on a dedicated server.
Grant or revoke operator status on Bedrock Dedicated Server
In the Bedrock Dedicated Server console, enter op <playername> to grant operator status. Microsoft documents the console syntax in its Bedrock Dedicated Server setup guide; its op command reference describes the command as granting operator status.
To remove that status, enter deop <playername> in the server console. The Bedrock setup guide documents both commands.

Choose the right kind of access
Operator access for administrative commands
Operator status gives a player elevated command privileges. It is the straightforward vanilla-server option when someone needs broad administrative command access, but it is not a way to allow just one specific command while withholding the rest.
Narrow permissions for a particular command
If a player should use only selected commands, check the permission system provided by your server software and any installed plugins. There is no universal plugin permission node or setup established across server types; the right configuration depends on the software and commands installed.

Allowlist access for joining
An allowlist controls which players may connect; it does not make them operators. On Bedrock Dedicated Server, configure the allowlist separately through the allow-list server property and allowlist.json, as described in Microsoft’s setup guide.
Bedrock Dedicated Server permission records
Bedrock Dedicated Server also provides /permission list and /permission reload to inspect or reload permission data. Microsoft’s permission command reference specifies that these commands are for dedicated servers only.

Java version and server-software considerations
The Java operator command is the practical route for granting access, but permission levels and configuration details can vary by Minecraft version and server distribution. Confirm documentation for the exact version and software you run before changing files such as ops.json or server.properties. Mojang’s Java server download page identifies the server as a Java JAR and notes the need for a compatible Java runtime; it does not provide detailed operator-configuration instructions.
