How Do I Change My Minecraft Server Tick Rate?

For Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.3 and later, administrators can inspect performance with /tick query and set the overall simulation target with /tick rate . Random block ticks and day/night clock speed are separate.

“Server tick” can mean the whole game simulation, random block updates, or the day/night clock. If you mean the overall simulation in Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.3 or later, an authorized administrator can set its target with /tick rate <rate>. The original question does not specify a game, edition, version, or server software, so confirm those details before using edition- or host-specific instructions.

Which kind of tick do you want to change?

Minecraft uses different settings and commands for different kinds of timing. Choose the one that matches your goal before changing anything.

What you want to change What it affects Relevant Minecraft Java feature
Whole-game simulation Overall simulation timing; changing the target can affect player simulation and responsiveness. /tick rate, available in Java Edition 1.20.3 and later. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.3 release notes.
Random block updates Random-tick behavior, including crop growth and effects such as snow and ice accumulation. randomTickSpeed is a separate mechanic, not a control for the overall simulation rate. See Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.2 release notes.
Day/night progression The pace of the World Clock, without accelerating the actual game simulation. Java Edition 26.1 documents a World Clock rate operation. See Mojang’s Java Edition 26.1 release notes.

Change the overall simulation rate in Java Edition

The following applies to Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.3 and later, where Mojang introduced the administrative /tick rate command. It assumes you have permission to run administrative commands. The command is not a universal Minecraft server setting, and exact access or controls can depend on the server software and how the server is managed.

  1. Check the version and permissions. Confirm that the server is running Java Edition 1.20.3 or later and that your account can run administrative commands.
  2. Inspect performance first. Run /tick query to check the target rate and tick-time performance. Mojang also documents using F3 + 2 to see the debug display, but specifies that this display is for an integrated server only.
  3. Set the target. Run /tick rate <rate>, replacing <rate> with a value. Mojang documents a valid range greater than 1.0 and less than 10000.0; that is a syntax range, not a recommended operating range.
  4. Check the result. Use /tick query again and assess gameplay. If performance or responsiveness worsens, change the target rather than assuming a higher number is better.

Mojang describes 20.0 as the default target. Below that target, players are simulated at a lower rate, including their movement and input, so play can feel unresponsive. Above 20.0, players continue to be simulated at 20 ticks per second to preserve expected responsiveness, but entity interpolation artifacts can occur. Raising the target is not a guaranteed way to improve server performance or player responsiveness.

  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Mojang warns that a very low rate can make the game feel unresponsive and an excessively high rate can crash it. Its release notes advise measuring with /tick query—or the integrated-server debug display where applicable—and adjusting the rate accordingly.

If you meant crops or other random block updates

randomTickSpeed controls random-tick behavior; it does not change the overall simulation target. If your goal is faster crop growth, changing the server’s overall tick rate is the wrong control. The exact syntax and availability of a random-tick setting should be checked against the server’s edition, version, and software before applying a command or editing a configuration.

If you meant the day/night cycle

Java Edition 26.1 documents a World Clock rate operation for changing clock progression. Mojang distinguishes that clock rate from /tick rate: changing the clock can accelerate or slow the day/night cycle without speeding up actual game simulation.

Why a generic server-properties edit may not work

For overall simulation timing, Mojang’s Java Edition documentation describes the /tick rate command. It does not establish that adding a generic tick= entry to server.properties changes Minecraft’s overall simulation rate. Avoid relying on such an entry unless documentation for your specific server software and version confirms what it does.

Hosting panels and server software can expose different controls, file locations, permissions, and restart procedures. Without the provider and software details, there is no reliable universal panel path; check the documentation for the specific server rather than applying instructions written for another host.
