You can’t make your boyfriend stop playing video games, but you can explain how his gaming affects you, ask for a specific change, and decide what you will do if the situation doesn’t improve. Start with a calm conversation about missed plans, shared responsibilities, or time together—not a judgment about his character or an arbitrary limit on his hours.
Start with what is happening between you
Choose a neutral moment—not while he is in a match or immediately after an argument. Becky Harris, Area Manager (Behavioural Addictions) at CNWL Addiction Services, advises: “Work on the relationship outside of gaming and try not to react in the moment of most emotion.” CNWL’s webinar report offers this guidance in the context of gaming-related concerns.
Describe an observable effect rather than calling him lazy, selfish, or addicted. For example: “When our plans get interrupted by gaming, I feel disconnected, and I miss having time together.” If the problem is chores, say which task is being left undone and how that affects you. Be clear about the pattern you want to address.
Ask for a change you can agree on together
Give him a chance to explain what gaming means to him and how he thinks it fits into his week. An open question such as “How do you feel gaming is fitting into your week?” can start that conversation. Listen before proposing a solution; the aim is to understand each other, not to win an argument about whether gaming is good or bad.

Then make one specific, negotiable request. For example, you could agree to protect plans you have already made, finish a shared task before gaming, or set aside an evening for time together. Ask what arrangement he thinks would work, too. The NHS family guidance on online gaming recommends discussing concerns and agreeing expectations together. It is general advice for families, not a couples intervention tested specifically with adult partners.
A mutually agreed expectation is different from imposing a device limit or trying to confiscate a controller. You can ask for consideration and decide what you need in a relationship, but you cannot control another adult’s choices.

Set a boundary around your own choices
A boundary describes what you will do—not a punishment designed to force him to comply. If he repeatedly drops plans to keep gaming, you might say, “If our plans fall through again, I’ll make other plans for the evening.” Follow through calmly and consistently. That makes your expectations clear without turning the conversation into a threat to control his gaming.
You can revisit the agreement after a period you both choose. If he does not want to change and the relationship still does not meet your needs, you can consider what you want to do next, including whether to seek couples counseling. Counseling may help you address relationship concerns; it is not a guarantee that he will stop gaming.

Gaming time alone does not establish a disorder
Frequent gaming is not, by itself, evidence of gaming disorder. The World Health Organization says the disorder affects only a small proportion of people who play digital or video games; its overview does not give a numeric prevalence rate. The WHO’s gaming-disorder Q&A describes concern in terms of a pattern and its effects, not simply the number of hours played.
In the WHO’s description, the pattern involves impaired control over gaming, gaming taking priority over other interests and daily activities, and continuing or escalating despite negative consequences. It must cause significant impairment in important areas of life. The pattern would normally have been evident for at least 12 months for a diagnosis, but that is not a reason to postpone a conversation or seek advice about problems affecting your relationship now. A partner cannot diagnose someone from their own account.

Numbers from other sources also show why prevalence estimates need context. The American Psychiatric Association’s 2024 overview reports that a 2016 Norwegian sample of 3,389 gamers classified 1.4% as “addicted gamers” and 7.3% as “problem gamers.” It also reports a 2022 meta-analysis of 61 studies across 29 countries with estimates of pathological gaming ranging from 0.3% to 17.7%. Those figures reflect different study categories and methods; they are not one settled estimate of how common gaming disorder is today.

Consider suggesting qualified support if he says he cannot control his gaming, it consistently displaces important activities, or he keeps playing despite meaningful consequences. Raise the concern without presenting yourself as his clinician: explain what you have noticed, say why it worries you, and ask whether he would consider talking with a professional.

In England, CNWL’s National Centre for Gaming Disorders provides support to people aged 13 and over who have difficulty controlling gaming and are experiencing effects on their lives. Its service information describes individual and/or group treatment, and CNWL also provides self-help material for gamers and concerned family members. Check CNWL’s service page for current eligibility and availability. It is an England-based service; if you live elsewhere, look for a qualified local mental-health or addiction service.
