Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo make a UE5 game run better on a low-end PC, lower its resolution or resolution scale and reduce demanding graphics options—especially global illumination, reflections, shadows, and effects—then compare performance in the same scene. If you mean the Unreal Editor rather than a game, use a Scalable project target and profile representative work on the actual target PC. The right changes depend on the game or project and the PC’s bottleneck; there is no universal setting that fixes every slowdown.
First, distinguish a UE5 game from the Unreal Editor
If you are playing a game, start with its own graphics menu. The game developer decides which Unreal Engine settings are available, so labels and options vary from one title to another. If you are developing in Unreal Editor, you can also adjust project and viewport settings, but those changes do not automatically optimize every game made with UE5.
Epic describes scalability as a way to adapt graphics to different hardware. Common adjustable areas include resolution, image quality, motion blur, and texture detail. The specific choices exposed to a player remain game-dependent. Epic’s scalability documentation explains the available concepts and trade-offs.
Make a repeatable baseline before changing settings
Choose a repeatable game area or editor scene, keep the resolution and other conditions consistent, and record performance before and after each adjustment. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change helped and what it cost visually. When available, compare CPU and GPU frame times as well as frame rate.

- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
Epic recommends benchmarking on the intended target hardware and profiling to identify bottlenecks. It notes that milliseconds can be more informative than an FPS change alone: a change that saves 5 ms is a measurable frame-time improvement, while a statement such as “10 FPS faster” does not describe the time budget as directly. See Scalability and the Developer.
Settings to try in a UE5 game
Lower resolution or resolution scale
Try a lower display resolution or, if the game offers it, reduce resolution scale. Resolution scaling renders the scene at a lower resolution and enlarges it for display; the 2D user interface is not reduced by this technique. It can improve performance when rendering is the limiting workload, but the image may look less clear. Epic describes the trade-off in its scalability reference.

Reduce costly lighting, reflections, shadows, and effects
Lower global illumination, reflections, shadows, and effects in the game’s graphics menu, then retest the same area. If the game exposes a Lumen quality option, Epic’s UE 5.8 Lumen Performance Guide says Medium targets Switch 2 and lower-end PCs and uses Irradiance Final Gather, a faster but lower-quality path than the higher-quality option. Low disables Lumen features. These settings can make a substantial visual difference, so choose based on both performance and image quality rather than assuming the lowest setting is best. Read Epic’s Lumen Performance Guide.
Use an upscaler if the game provides one
Epic documents Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) as a temporal upsampling method used by Lumen for 4K output: the engine renders Lumen and other features at a lower internal resolution, then upscales the result. A game may offer TSR or a different upscaling option, but availability and controls vary by title. If available, compare its performance and image clarity against the game’s native-resolution setting.

Optimizing a UE5 project in Unreal Editor
Start with the Scalable target
For a project aimed at less powerful hardware, Epic’s Scalable target disables some high-end features by default. Treat it as a starting point: enable only features that the target device can handle, and validate the result in your own content. It is not an automatic performance guarantee. See Epic’s project settings documentation.
Test representative content on the minimum-spec PC
Lower scalability groups and profile representative gameplay, maps, and effects on the actual lowest-spec device you intend to support. A quiet test room may not reveal the cost of a busy combat scene or complex effects. Compare frame time, memory use, and the visual or gameplay impact of each setting; scalability is a quality-and-performance decision, not simply a search for the lowest graphics level. Epic recommends benchmarking on intended target hardware and cautions that broad hardware support requires additional development and QA work.

When hardware is the constraint
Do not buy a GPU or memory kit based only on low frame rates. First identify whether the workload is limited by the GPU, CPU, or memory. Epic’s UE 5.8 recommended development hardware includes a quad-core Intel or AMD processor at 2.5 GHz or faster, 32 GB of RAM, 8 GB or more of graphics RAM, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card with current drivers. These are recommendations for developing with Unreal Engine, not minimum requirements for every UE5 game.
Epic lists feature-specific requirements separately; Lumen, Nanite, and Virtual Shadow Maps have their own graphics and API support conditions. Check the requirements for your installed engine version and project features on Epic’s Unreal Engine hardware and software specifications.

If you are developing and have less memory than the recommended 32 GB, a RAM upgrade may be worth considering, but it will not resolve a GPU or CPU bottleneck by itself. Before buying memory, verify the motherboard or laptop’s supported memory generation, maximum capacity, and available slots. The cited development recommendations do not establish that adding RAM will raise frame rate in a game when the PC already has sufficient memory.
How to decide whether a setting helped
Compare each option in the same scene and at the same resolution. Use frame time or frame rate to judge performance, and check image clarity, lighting and reflection quality, and stability. For a development project, include memory use and representative gameplay or editor tasks. Keep a change only if its measured benefit is worth its visual or functional cost.
