Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stop automatic cloud backups on Nintendo Switch, open HOME > System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud > Settings, select the user, and switch off Automatic Save-Data Backup. You can turn it off for one user’s games generally or change the setting for individual games. The setting is stored on each console, so make the change on every Switch where you want automatic backups disabled.
Turn off automatic backups for a user
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management > Save Data Cloud > Settings.
- Choose the user whose automatic backup setting you want to change.
- Turn Automatic Save-Data Backup off.
Nintendo says automatic backup is on by default and can be changed to off later. The menu labels above are in English; Nintendo’s cited support guidance is in Japanese, so look for the equivalent Save Data Cloud option if your console uses another language or the wording has changed after a system update.
Turn it off for selected games instead
If you want automatic backups to continue for most games, use the individual software settings in the same Save Data Cloud settings area. Choose the relevant game and disable automatic backup for that software rather than changing the user-wide setting.
Check every Switch you use
Nintendo stores these backup settings separately on each console. Changing the setting on one Switch does not change it on another, so repeat the steps on each device where you want automatic cloud uploads to stop.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What turning off automatic backup does—and does not do
- It stops automatic uploads; it does not delete a cloud copy already stored on Nintendo’s servers. Deleting server data is a separate action. Nintendo warns that deleted server data cannot be restored, so do not delete it unless that is what you intend.
- It does not delete the save on your console. Switch save data is kept in system memory, not on the game card or microSD card.
- It does not necessarily prevent all cloud activity. Manual backup is a separate option available title by title. Use it only when you mean to upload a backup; manual backup or download actions can overwrite server or console data.
Requirements and exceptions
Nintendo Switch Online and game support
Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and some games do not support the service. Nintendo’s Japanese support page lists unsupported Nintendo and Pokémon titles, with that list marked current as of July 30, 2026. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for a specific game rather than assuming every title can use cloud saves.
Backups may be delayed
Automatic backups can run while the console is asleep, but require an internet connection. A game currently being played, no connection, a powered-off console, or an unstable connection can prevent or delay a backup.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses a separate service
Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses its own island backup and restoration service, not the standard Save Data Cloud feature. The general per-game cloud setting does not control that service; manage its backup through the game’s own settings.
