On the default PC keyboard layout, equip food or a potion in an Inventory consumables slot, then press R for slot 1 or F for slot 2. These are PC defaults, not universal console controls; check the game’s Controls Help or options if you use a controller or have rebound keys.
Equip and use food or potions
- Open Inventory. The default PC key is I.
- Place an item in a consumables slot. Select food or a potion and double-click it or drag it to a slot. You can also select a potion and equip it. In the tutorial’s menu instructions, food is found in the Inventory panel’s Usable Items tab; exact navigation varies between keyboard and controller instructions.
- Use it during gameplay. Press R for consumables slot 1 or F for slot 2 on the default PC layout. Press Tab to open the Quick Access Menu.
Food restores Vitality. Potions provide their effects but raise Toxicity when consumed. The PC manual warns that critical Toxicity causes Vitality loss; it does not give a universal numeric threshold.
Replenish potion doses
Enter Meditation to replenish potion doses. According to the tutorial instructions, hard alcohol in your inventory is used automatically for replenishment. The source does not establish a universal dose count.
Apply oils to a sword
Oils are not activated from a consumables slot like food or potions. Apply an oil to a sword through the Inventory panel, choosing one suited to the opponent and the correct sword. Use oils for monsters vulnerable to silver on the silver sword; apply other oils to the steel sword. An oil increases damage against its relevant opponent type, and each landed blow wears away some of the coating. The tutorial also documents radial-menu application and an “Automatically Apply Blade Oils” gameplay setting.

Controls can be rebound. The manual cited here does not establish exact current defaults for every console platform, so use the displayed binding in Controls Help or the game’s options rather than applying these PC keys to a console.
