It depends on what permission Xbox is asking for. To approve a Microsoft parental-consent request, use the link in the request email while signed in to the adult Microsoft account. To manage family controls, add the child to your Microsoft family group. To require approval for purchases, enable Ask a parent in the child’s Xbox privacy settings. These are separate actions, and one does not replace another.
Choose the permission you need

Approve a Microsoft parental-consent request
- Open the consent request link in the email sent to the parent or guardian.
- Sign in with the adult Microsoft account that will give consent.
- Review and approve the request.
Microsoft’s consent rules depend on the region. The adult account that originally granted consent manages or removes it. If you cannot access that account, Microsoft recommends trying account recovery; its guidance warns that the child may lose access to their account if the adult account remains inaccessible. If the child does not appear in consent management, another adult or Microsoft account may have granted consent. See Microsoft’s parental-consent guidance.

Add the child to your Microsoft family group
On the web
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com/family using the family organizer’s account.
- Choose Add a family member, select Member (normally the appropriate role for a child), and send the invitation.
- Have the child sign in to accept the invitation. If the child is below the statutory age for their region, Microsoft may prompt them to request adult consent.
On an Xbox console
- Sign in with the family organizer account.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > Add to family.
- Follow the option that matches the child’s situation: they may already have an Xbox Live account on the console, have one elsewhere, or need a new account.
Only family organizers can add family members. A child already in another Microsoft family group must leave it or be removed before joining yours. See Microsoft’s family-group instructions.
Require approval for Microsoft Store purchases on Xbox
- Sign in to the Xbox with a family organizer account.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings.
- Choose Manage family members, select the child, then open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
- Turn on Ask a parent.
Microsoft also says choosing Child defaults or Teen defaults after opening Xbox Live privacy can enable purchase approval. Console menu labels may change; if the path differs, consult Microsoft’s current instructions for purchase approval on Xbox.

Connect the child’s account to the Xbox
- Open the Xbox guide and sign in.
- Choose Add new, then sign in with the child’s Microsoft account.
After sign-in, Microsoft says the console should appear among the child’s connected devices. A connected device is needed for Family Safety features that rely on it, such as screen-time limits and activity reporting. Who can manage family permissions?
Family organizers administer the group: they can add or remove members and manage limits, permissions, and consent. Members can request purchase approvals or ask for more device time. Family Safety controls that depend on a device, including screen-time limits and app or web filters, require the device to be connected to the child’s account. If third-party apps are blocked
If the child sees a message saying a parent blocked apps not published by Microsoft, sign in to the child account access page and enable third-party app access. This permission is associated with the adult account that originally granted consent. A family organizer may not see or be able to change it if a different adult account granted consent. There is no single minimum age for consent that applies everywhere: requirements depend on local law and Microsoft’s regional rules. If the birth date on the child’s account is wrong, Microsoft says the adult who granted consent must manage the child’s personal information. The child cannot remove required consent by changing their own birth date. See Microsoft’s birth-date guidance.
