To use Valheim’s ordinary console commands, enable the console on your game client with -console, enter a world, open the console, and run devcommands. But that does not establish that the full cheat and debug command set works on a vanilla dedicated server. Server admin access is a separate permission: Iron Gate documents it for commands such as kicking and banning players, not as a way to unlock every devcommand.
Enable and open the console on your client
The -console launch option enables the client console; it is not a dedicated-server argument. Iron Gate’s platform-specific instructions are in its How to Enable Developer Mode support article.
- Steam: In your Steam Library, open Valheim’s Properties and add
-consoleto Launch Options. Start the game through Steam. - Microsoft Store: Add
-consoleto the game shortcut’s target, following Iron Gate’s support instructions. - Xbox: The console is enabled by default.
- Mac App Store: Launch the app with
-consoleas described in Iron Gate’s support article. - Enter a world and press F5 to open the console. With a controller, use LB + LT + Start.
- Type
devcommandsand execute it. Iron Gate says most console commands become eligible after this command; that wording is not a guarantee that every command works in every multiplayer or dedicated-server context.
If F5 does not open the console, check that you started the game through the platform setup or shortcut that includes -console. Also check whether your keyboard’s function-key mode requires an Fn key.
Dedicated-server admin access is a separate setup
For the admin commands Iron Gate documents, add your case-sensitive Platform User ID to adminlist.txt in the server’s save directory, with one ID per line. You can find the ID in the server log or the in-game F2 panel. See Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide for the server-side setup.

Once recognized as an admin, use the in-game console for the documented server-management commands:
Kick PLAYERNAME— remove a player from the server.Ban PLAYERNAME— ban a player.Unban PLAYERNAME— remove a ban.Banned— list bans.
These are admin functions, not evidence that adminlist.txt grants access to item spawning, debugmode, or the entire developer-command set. Iron Gate’s server guide does not explicitly define the full cheat-command boundary. A community-maintained Valheim console-commands reference says admin status alone does not grant cheats or debug mode, so do not treat adding yourself to the admin list as a universal devcommands unlock.

Keep server permission files and world settings distinct
adminlist.txtidentifies server admins.bannedlist.txtrecords bans.permittedlist.txtrestricts who can join. Iron Gate warns that enabling this list prevents everyone not listed from joining.
For world configuration, the dedicated-server guide documents launch arguments for presets, modifiers, and world keys such as nomap. These configure the server world; they are not a substitute for the client console and do not demonstrate that cheats are enabled. The guide does not document devcommands as a server launch argument, so do not add it to the server startup script as if it were a server flag.
Achievement and version notes
As of the official Patch 1.0.17 notes dated October 6, 2026, no devcommands-specific change is listed. Patch 1.0.14, dated September 17, 2026, says the persistent-events command pevents was placed behind the devcommands toggle and is not available in the console by default; the notes also mention a fix for characters mistakenly marked as temporary cheaters. Iron Gate’s September 11, 2026 Steam hotfix announcement introduced an opt-in command for achievements after prior devcommands or mod use: yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway (remove the spaces when entering it). The announcement describes the fix as Steam-specific and says it would be extended to other platforms in a later hotfix. Check the current platform-specific rollout before relying on that command outside Steam.
