In Minecraft: Java Edition, open Options > Chat Settings. In Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, open chat and select the gear beside the chat input. Those menus change how chat appears or sounds; if you cannot communicate online, check the Microsoft/Xbox account permissions instead.
Choose the right settings menu
| Edition or goal | Where to go | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition: change chat display or behavior | Options > Chat Settings | Chat mode, appearance, timing, narration, and command suggestions. Minecraft Java chat settings |
| Bedrock Edition: change chat appearance or related options | Open chat, then select the gear icon beside the chat input | Muting chat, text-to-speech, font, size, spacing, and colors. Labels and availability can vary by device. Minecraft Bedrock accessibility settings |
| Child account cannot communicate online | Xbox Family app or online Xbox privacy settings | Account-level communication permissions, not just in-game chat display. Minecraft child account social settings |
Menu wording and controls are not guaranteed to be identical across every edition and platform. Minecraft lists Java and Bedrock as separate editions, and Bedrock runs on several device families. See Minecraft edition details.
Change chat settings in Java Edition
- Open Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Select Options.
- Select Chat Settings.
- Choose the setting you want to change, then return to the game.
Choose what appears in chat
The Chat Mode setting determines which messages appear:
- Shown displays player chat, system messages, and commands.
- Commands Only displays command messages.
- Hidden hides all chat messages.
Hiding chat changes what is displayed; it does not revoke the account’s permission to communicate online.

Adjust readability and behavior
Java’s Chat Settings include controls for colors, web links, chat text opacity, text background opacity, text size, line spacing, chat delay, width, focused and unfocused height, narrator, and command suggestions. Use the specific control that matches your goal: size and spacing affect readability, opacity changes how strongly chat overlays the game, delay affects when messages appear, and narrator and command suggestions affect interaction. The official Java chat settings guide describes these options.

If you cannot chat online
Display settings and online communication permissions are different. For a child account, a parent or guardian can manage who the child may communicate with through the Xbox Family app or online Xbox privacy settings. Minecraft says these account-level controls apply to Java and Bedrock even when the game is not being played on an Xbox. After changing settings in the Family app, sign out of Minecraft and restart it so the change can take effect. Manage child account social settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Chat filtering and moderation are separate
Muting, hiding, or restyling chat does not establish that chat filtering or moderation has been disabled. Minecraft says Bedrock’s profanity filter is on by default and cannot be disabled for a signed-in child account. Filtering applies in contexts including Realms, partner servers, and other multiplayer experiences; Java filtering applies on Realms. Realms communications are monitored, while moderation on private servers is controlled by the server owner. These behaviors depend on the account and multiplayer context, not simply the display menu.
