To buy Minecraft with a prepaid game card, use a card specifically for Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Sign in to the Microsoft account the player will use, redeem the code on Minecraft’s official redemption page, review what it unlocks, and confirm. Check the card’s edition and region terms before buying: a platform-store gift card is store balance, not automatically a Minecraft game code.
Check which kind of gift card you have
Minecraft documents prepaid game cards for Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. The code grants the game entitlement; it is not the same thing as adding money to an Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or mobile-store account. Official instructions do not establish that every platform-store gift card can purchase Minecraft in every country, so check the card and the relevant store’s terms for your region before paying.

For a physical prepaid game card, the code is under a scratch-off panel or printed on the store receipt. If you are buying a digital code, check the retailer’s product description and confirm the edition and region are right for the recipient. Minecraft’s official redemption page describes the PC Java & Bedrock prepaid-card path.
Redeem a Minecraft prepaid card
- Sign in to the intended account. Open Minecraft’s redemption page and sign in to the Microsoft account that should own the game. Minecraft requires an active Microsoft account to redeem.
- Enter the code. Type the card’s 25-character code in the 5-by-5 format shown on the page.
- Review before applying it. Check the content displayed and make sure it is the game and edition you expect. Once redeemed, a code can only be used once.
- Confirm and install. Complete the redemption. Minecraft’s prepaid-card instructions direct you from the confirmation screen to install Minecraft or its Launcher; available installer steps depend on your operating system. See Minecraft Help’s prepaid-card instructions.
Choose the account carefully
The game is attached through the Microsoft account used during redemption. If the recipient will play on their own account, redeem while signed in to that account—not the buyer’s account. If you are giving the card as a present, it is usually simplest to let the recipient redeem it themselves so the entitlement goes to their account.

Prepaid card or direct email gift?
If you want to give the game digitally without handing over a code, Minecraft Help also documents a direct email-gift option through Minecraft.net or Microsoft Store. Select the game, choose the gift option, enter the recipient’s email and sender name, choose a payment method, review, and complete checkout. Availability and payment options can depend on region; check the checkout flow before purchasing.

Can an Xbox gift card buy Minecraft?
An Xbox gift card adds store balance; it is not the same product as a prepaid Minecraft game code. Whether store balance can be used for a Minecraft purchase depends on the store, edition, and country or region. The official sources do not confirm that every Xbox, console, or mobile store card works for every Minecraft version. Verify the listing and payment terms in the store where the recipient will play.
Don’t confuse Minecoins with the game
Minecoins are currency for Minecraft Marketplace purchases such as skins, texture packs, worlds, and mash-up packs. They buy Marketplace content, not the base Minecraft game. Minecraft’s redemption page and Minecoins FAQ describe redeeming prepaid Minecoins and seeing the balance in Marketplace after signing in.

If the code does not work
- Re-enter it carefully, checking look-alike characters such as O and 0 or I and 1.
- Confirm that it has not already been redeemed and that you are signed in to the intended Microsoft account.
- For a physical card, uncover the full scratch-off code. For digital purchases, check the retailer’s confirmation email or order history; for a gifted code, check the sender’s message or email.
- Some older Java-only cards bought before December 1, 2020, and some region-specific codes may have special limits or handling requirements.
- If it still fails, contact Minecraft Support and have proof of purchase ready.
If a Microsoft Store transaction is failing, Minecraft Help says a prepaid Minecraft card may be a possible payment workaround, not a guaranteed fix. Payment methods vary by country or region; see Minecraft’s transaction troubleshooting guidance.
