Find the model number first
- Turn the Vita over and inspect the rear casing label. Look for a number beginning with PCH-.
- Read the family number. PCH-1000 and PCH-1100 variants belong to the original family; PCH-2000 identifies the redesigned family. Sony documents the two families in separate PCH-1000 series and PCH-2000 series user guides.
- For a used-console listing, ask for a clear photo of that label. Informal descriptions such as “fat” or “slim” and the casing’s appearance are less reliable than the printed model number.
Use the hardware as a cross-check

OLED versus LCD: what the screen tells you
Sony specifies a 5-inch, 960 × 544 OLED touchscreen for the PCH-1001/1101 models, and a 5-inch, 960 × 544 LCD touchscreen for the PCH-2001. The same screen size and resolution therefore do not distinguish the families; the technology does. The cited specifications appear in Sony’s PCH-1001/1101 manual and PCH-2001 manual.
Screen appearance is not definitive on a second-hand console: a display may have been replaced. If the screen seems inconsistent with the rear label, check the ports too rather than identifying the Vita from appearance alone.
Why a SIM slot is not a universal test
Sony lists a SIM card slot for the PCH-1101 3G/Wi-Fi model in its PCH-1001/1101 manual. That makes a SIM slot a clue to that particular 1000-family variant, not a feature of every PCH-1000. Its absence is inconclusive.

Which checks should you trust?
- Best confirmation: the complete PCH number on the rear label.
- Useful corroboration: the connector layout and, when original, the display technology.
- Weak checks on their own: weight, dimensions, and informal “fat” or “slim” names. The cited specifications are for particular regional models, and sellers may use those names inconsistently.
Sony’s online user guides cover the PCH-1000 and PCH-2000 series and state that they apply to system software 3.73 or later. The detailed figures above come from manuals for regional models PCH-1001/1101 and PCH-2001, so do not assume every suffix or specification is identical in every region.
