For a digital Xbox game bought through Microsoft, the purchaser—not necessarily the recipient—should check the order in their Xbox purchase history and submit a refund request if that option is available. Microsoft does not guarantee approval, and its published guidance does not spell out a separate return process for gift recipients. Physical products, gift cards and purchases from other retailers follow different routes.
First, identify what kind of Xbox gift it is
“Xbox gift” can mean a digital game or add-on, a subscription or gift card, or a physical console or accessory. The seller and item type determine which return route applies.

- Digital game or add-on bought through Microsoft: The purchaser can check Xbox order history for a refund request option.
- Digital gift card or service/subscription card: Microsoft Store lists these cards as ineligible for return.
- Physical console or accessory: Use the return process of the retailer that sold it. Microsoft Store returns apply to eligible purchases made from Microsoft.
How to request a refund for a digital game
Microsoft’s documented process starts with the account that purchased the game. Its refund guidance says the customer may be able to request a refund for a game or app bought from Microsoft.
- Have the purchaser sign in to Xbox order history with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Find and select the game or add-on.
- If Request a refund appears, select it, provide a reason and submit the request.
- Wait for Microsoft to process the request. Submitting it does not mean the refund has been approved.
Can the person who received the gift return it?
Microsoft’s published pages reviewed here do not explain whether a gift recipient can initiate a refund, or how redemption status affects eligibility. If the recipient cannot see the transaction in their own purchase history, that account may not contain the purchaser’s order record. Ask the giver to check the purchasing account and, if the refund option is missing or the situation involves a gift-specific question, contact Xbox Support.

Do not assume that an unredeemed code can be returned, or that redeeming a gift automatically makes it refundable or nonrefundable. The official guidance cited here does not establish either rule.
What if it is a gift card or physical item?
Digital gift cards and subscription cards
Microsoft Store’s return policy lists digital gift cards and service or subscription cards as ineligible for return. This is distinct from requesting a refund for an eligible digital game purchase.

Physical Xbox products bought from Microsoft
For an eligible physical product purchased from Microsoft Store, sign in and check Order history for Request a return. Follow the eligibility instructions shown for that order. The option and eligibility depend on the purchase.
Items bought from another retailer
Contact the retailer that sold the console, accessory or other item. Microsoft Store’s physical-product return process does not determine another seller’s policy.

How long does a refund take?
Microsoft says a refund request may take up to 72 hours to process. Once issued, a refund is generally processed to the original payment method within 3–5 business days; the payment provider may take additional time to post the credit. These are processing estimates, not a promise that a request will be approved.

Microsoft’s general policy says digital goods, including games, are not returnable unless the offer or applicable law makes the purchase eligible for a refund. The order-history request route is therefore an opportunity to submit a request where available, not a universal return entitlement.
