Warzone matchmaking starts with the playlist and squad size you choose, then searches for an eligible match under that playlist’s current rules and applicable settings. The rules are not identical across every mode: Activision has announced skill-minimal Open Matchmaking for a specified set of ordinary Warzone modes, while Ranked uses skill brackets. The company has not disclosed a complete, current formula that predicts exactly who will appear in a lobby.
How a Warzone lobby is assembled
In practical terms, you choose an available Warzone playlist and squad size, form or join a party, and start searching. Matchmaking looks for an eligible match based on the current playlist, mode, region and applicable settings. Playlist availability and rules can change by season, and may vary by region; Activision says it monitors matchmaking and may make adjustments. That means “Warzone matchmaking” is not one fixed rule applied in the same way to every queue. Casual, other non-Casual playlists and Ranked can have different matching rules, and a playlist’s availability can change. Activision’s notes establish some of those differences but do not publish a complete general formula.
Does Warzone use skill-based matchmaking?
It depends on the playlist and mode. In the Black Ops 7 Season 01 notes, Activision announced Open Matchmaking—where skill is minimally considered—for non-Casual modes on the Warzone playlist. That is a scoped announcement for that playlist and season; it should not be treated as a promise that every Warzone mode, or every later season, uses the same approach. [c002]

Ranked is a separate case. Warzone Season 04 2026 notes say Activision updated Ranked matchmaking configuration to enforce intended skill brackets more consistently. The notes describe the objective, but do not give the algorithm, numerical ratings or bracket cutoffs. [c003]

Why do some lobbies feel sweaty?
A tough match does not, by itself, reveal which matchmaking rule placed the players together. A playlist may apply different skill considerations from another, and in an Open Matchmaking mode skill is described as minimally considered—not eliminated. Ranked, meanwhile, is explicitly configured around intended skill brackets. Activision’s published notes do not disclose a personal hidden rating or a reliable way to infer lobby composition from a run of wins, losses or other player-level signals. [c002] [c003]

Activision’s 2024 article about matchmaking discusses connection, time to match, playlist variety, recent maps and modes, performance, input device, platform and voice chat. But the article expressly says it focuses on Multiplayer only, not Warzone. Those factors are useful context about the publisher’s disclosed Multiplayer approach, not proof of Warzone’s current formula. Read the Multiplayer matchmaking article. [c001]
Can cross-play or party settings affect the queue?
Yes. Cross-play restrictions can reduce the eligible pool, and Activision’s Season 03 2025 notes warn that limiting cross-play can negatively affect matchmaking queue times. The same notes describe a temporary cross-play preference adjustment for certain mixed-platform parties so they can matchmake; the preferred setting is restored when the party disbands. As a practical consequence, narrowing eligibility can make it harder to find an available match. The notes do not quantify a wait-time increase, and changing a setting cannot guarantee a faster queue or a particular kind of lobby.
Party-finding tools
A 2023 Warzone Ranked release described Find a Party filters for communication style, language and playstyle, along with SR-based party restrictions in certain higher divisions. What can you know about your next lobby?
You can check the active playlist and its current rules, and you can review party and cross-play settings that affect who is eligible to queue. You cannot use the official material cited here to calculate the exact players, skill mix or wait time for your next match. Activision has not published a complete current Warzone matchmaking formula, a verified player-level prediction rule or exact Ranked bracket thresholds. [c001] [c002] [c003]
