There is no general vanilla gamerule for changing that timer. The available method depends on your edition: Java players can use entity-age commands, datapacks, or a mod; Bedrock add-on creators can prevent their own custom items from despawning, but cannot use that component to change every ordinary drop.
What is the default item despawn time?
An ordinary dropped item is normally removed when its Age reaches 6,000 ticks, equivalent to five minutes at 20 ticks per second. The Minecraft Wiki’s item entity reference documents this value. The timer is tied to the item entity being processed, so do not assume an unloaded chunk consumes five minutes of ordinary real time.
Can you change it with a vanilla gamerule?
No general item-despawn timer gamerule appears in the documented vanilla rule sets. Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamerule documentation describes the command as one that “Sets or queries a game rule value” and lists supported rules; it does not include a dropped-item duration. The Java and Bedrock game rule reference likewise describes gamerules as predefined options. A community feature request to change the five-minute timer is not evidence that such a rule has been implemented.
Extend the timer in Java Edition without a mod
Java’s item entity data includes an Age value. It normally increases as an item ages, and the item is removed at 6,000 ticks. Setting the age to a negative value effectively gives it additional time before that threshold; the item entity reference documents Age: -32768 as a value that prevents age increase and automatic despawning.
#1 Best Overall
You can apply age changes with commands or build them into a datapack, but the command logic matters. A repeating command that keeps forcing an item’s age negative can keep it around indefinitely, rather than extending its life by one interval. For a one-time extension, the logic must identify eligible items, adjust their age once, then mark or otherwise exclude them from being processed again. The age field has a short numeric range, so it cannot be pushed arbitrarily far below zero.
A Minecraft Feedback post includes a community-submitted command-block example and discusses tagging items to avoid repeatedly resetting their age. It is not a Mojang-supported recipe; check its syntax and selector behavior against your exact Java version before using it. See the example at Minecraft Feedback. Back up your world before testing command blocks or datapack logic, especially if selectors might affect every dropped item.

- Let this light-up version of the redstone ore block from Minecraft empower your fandom.
- Although this version of the ore doesn't emit redstone dust particles, it does emit light. The touch-activated LED features three modes: on, off, and a gentle pulse.
- Measuring just over 4" tall, it's the perfect size for any space in your home, dorm, office or wherever you play.
- You can't use this block to produce circuits and gates, but it's is powered by 3 AAA batteries (not included) so it can go anywhere with you.
- For Minecraft fans ages 8+
Use a Java mod for configurable durations
If you want configuration rather than custom command logic, Serilum’s Configurable Despawn Timer advertises a global duration, per-item durations, and an option for player-dropped items to never despawn. Its listing states that the game’s default is 6,000 ticks and that the mod’s globalItemDespawnTimeInTicks default is 12,000 ticks—ten minutes at 20 ticks per second. In its per-item configuration, 0 means no despawn and -1 inherits the global duration.
The listing also documents /cdt usage and /cdt reload. Before installing, check the file page for a release matching your Minecraft version and mod loader, and confirm whether your world or server environment can load it. The listing includes releases for Minecraft 26.1, but compatibility depends on the specific game version and loader rather than the mod name alone.

What Bedrock Edition players can change
Bedrock does not provide a general vanilla gamerule for the lifespan of all dropped items. For add-on authors, the Bedrock-OSS item components reference documents minecraft:should_despawn. Setting it to false prevents floating stacks of that custom item from despawning, and the component requires item format version 1.20.20 or later.
This is a setting for a custom item definition, not a switch for extending every ordinary vanilla drop. Java entity-age commands and Java mods are also not interchangeable with Bedrock add-on components.

Choose the method that matches your goal
| Method | Edition and scope | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Commands or datapack logic | Java; adjust item entity age | Flexible, but requires careful selection and one-time processing logic; syntax should be checked for your version. |
| Configurable Despawn Timer | Java; global and per-item settings, plus a player-drop option | Requires a compatible mod loader and matching game release. |
minecraft:should_despawn |
Bedrock add-on custom item definitions | Prevents despawning for the defined custom item; does not govern all ordinary drops. |
