On an original Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, open HOME Menu > Controllers. The screen shows an approximate battery level for each connected Joy-Con and an icon indicating whether it is charging. For Joy-Con attached to the console to charge, the Switch must be connected to its AC adapter and powered on or in Sleep Mode.
Check the charging indicator on the Switch
- From the HOME Menu, select Controllers.
- Look at each connected Joy-Con’s battery graphic and charging icon. Nintendo says the screen displays the approximate battery charge and an icon showing whether connected controllers are charging. See Nintendo Support.
Charging Joy-Con while attached to the console
Slide each Joy-Con fully onto the console’s rails, then connect the Switch to its AC adapter. The console can be powered on or in Sleep Mode while the attached controllers charge. Nintendo estimates that a Joy-Con takes approximately three and a half hours to charge fully; this is an approximate duration, not a guarantee for every battery or charging condition. Know which grip you have
The two original Switch grips look similar but serve different purposes:

For Joy-Con used with a Switch Lite, Nintendo lists a Charging Grip or Charging Stand as charging options; the Lite itself cannot charge Joy-Con. Check controller generation before buying: HAC-012 is for original Joy-Con, not Switch 2 Joy-Con 2. See Nintendo Support and Nintendo Support.

If the Joy-Con do not show that they are charging
- On the HOME Menu, open Controllers and check the battery graphic and charging icon for each connected controller.
- If the Joy-Con are attached to the Switch, make sure they are fully seated on the rails. Connect the console to its AC adapter and leave it powered on or in Sleep Mode.
- If charging still does not appear, try a different Nintendo Switch AC adapter if available. Nintendo also recommends testing with a Charging Grip if you have one. See Nintendo Support.
- If the Joy-Con charge on the console but not on a grip, verify the grip is the charging model HAC-012, not HAC-011. If HAC-012 still fails while the console charges the controllers, Nintendo’s troubleshooting recommends replacing the grip. See Nintendo Support.
- If the Joy-Con will not charge by either method, or do not fully charge or hold a charge as expected, contact Nintendo Support about service.
