Trade only after you see Mending: completing a trade locks in the villager’s offers. The method is repeatable, but the offer is random, so no fixed number of attempts guarantees success.
First check whether the world has the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment enabled. If it does, the experiment’s biome-specific rules change where to seek Mending.
Check your world’s trade setting first
The usual lectern-reroll method applies to ordinary trade rules. With the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment enabled, Mending is a special book offered by a master-level swamp librarian. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.20.30 release notes describe the rebalanced trades as experimental and say they must be enabled; the Mending reference records the swamp and master-level requirement for the experiment in both Java and Bedrock. Check the setting for your specific world rather than assuming the rule applies to every world or edition. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.20.30 notes say: “As an experiment, these changes are not yet final, and they will stay as experimental features while we continue to work on them.”
Reroll a librarian until Mending appears
- Find an eligible villager. Use an unemployed adult villager that has not been traded with. A lectern is the librarian job-site block. Minecraft Wiki: Villager
- Assign the librarian job. Place a lectern where the villager can claim it, then open the villager’s trade offers and inspect the enchanted book.
- Refresh an unwanted offer. If the book is not Mending, break the lectern and place it again, then inspect the offer. Repeat until Mending appears. Because offers are random, the number of cycles needed varies. Minecraft Wiki: Trading
- Lock in the offer. Once Mending is offered, complete a trade with the villager. Do not trade while the book offer is unwanted: trading preserves the offer and prevents this reroll process from changing it.
- Apply the book. Use an anvil to combine the Mending book with an eligible item. Microsoft Learn: Enchantments
Why “every time” does not mean a guaranteed attempt count
The repeatable part is the process: inspect the offer, refresh it if needed, and trade only when it is Mending. The result itself is random, and the cited guidance establishes no maximum number of lectern cycles. If the offer does not change, check that the villager has not already been traded with and that another lectern is not affecting which villager claims the job site. The latter is a practical troubleshooting check based on job-site assignment, not a guarantee about every cause of an unchanged offer.

What Mending does and where else to find it
Mending repairs a damaged item when you collect experience orbs. An enchanted book is one way to apply the enchantment, using an anvil. Microsoft Learn’s enchantment documentation describes librarian emerald trades as a source of enchanted books and the anvil as the combining method.
Other listed acquisition routes include structure chest loot, vaults, and fishing; the reference also lists raid drops in Bedrock. The cited sources do not establish comparative probabilities, so they do not show that one alternative is always faster than rerolling a librarian. Minecraft Wiki: Mending
