To find a broken Sims 4 mod, first test the game with mods removed. If the problem disappears, add files back in recorded batches and use the 50/50 method to narrow down the culprit. Back up your saves, delete localthumbcache.package, and exit without saving while mods are disabled.
First, check whether a mod is causing the problem
A broken-mod list, error code, or exception report can point you toward a cause, but none proves which file is responsible. A controlled test without mods is the best starting point.
- Back up your saves. Keep a separate copy before troubleshooting, especially after a game update.
- Close the game and move the Mods folder out of your Sims 4 user folder.
- Delete
localthumbcache.packagefrom the Sims 4 user folder. - Launch the game and reproduce the problem. Load or resume a save and test in Live Mode, as EA recommends.
- Exit without saving. Saving while mods and custom content are disabled can remove content from the saved game.
If the problem still happens without mods, a mod is not established as the cause; investigate a game issue or another possible cause. Check compatibility notes for your game patch
Check the mod creator’s own site or post for compatibility with the patch installed on your game. Some creators need time to update their files, and some mods may require a full reinstallation rather than a simple replacement. EA puts it this way: “Since we don’t screen or support any Mods, it’s possible a Mod that didn’t cause any issues for players before could cause them after an update.”

The EA Forums Broken/Updated Mods and CC list is another place to check; a new list is normally created for each patch. It is selective, so a mod’s absence from the list does not establish that it is compatible. Check the game version shown on the main menu and consult current creator instructions rather than relying on an older list.
Use the 50/50 method to isolate the file
Once the vanilla test indicates that mods or CC are involved, reintroduce files in batches. Keep a record of each batch so you know what changed between tests.

- Put back a batch of files and launch the game.
- Reproduce the problem. If it returns, the responsible file or an interaction may be in that batch; if it does not, test another batch.
- When a batch triggers the problem, remove about half of its files and test again.
- Use the result to narrow the suspect group: keep splitting the group that produces the issue until you identify the responsible file or files.
- Confirm the suspected fix by testing with the file removed, then restoring it and checking whether the problem returns.
Start with gameplay mods, which change game functions, before cosmetic custom content. EA says gameplay mods are more likely to cause problems than CC. If removing gameplay mods does not resolve the issue, test your CC in batches as well. A conflict can involve more than one file, so the culprit may be a combination rather than a single mod.
Recognize clues without treating them as proof
EA lists failures to start or load a save, small in-game abnormalities, broken CC appearance, and incorrect gameplay as possible signs of mod trouble. Script-related error codes may also offer a lead: EA names 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131. Code 110 often appears after an update and is caused by outdated mods. These clues do not identify a specific file; use the vanilla test and batch testing to confirm the cause.

What troubleshooting tools can—and cannot—tell you
- Last exception reports: An LE is an error recorded in a file. Better Exceptions and MC Command Center can generate more informative versions, but a report is a clue rather than a complete diagnosis.
- Sims 4 Studio: Used to edit CC and batch-update CC.
- Sims 4 Tray Importer: Helps identify CC worn by a Sim.
These utilities have specific jobs; they are not universal broken-mod scanners. The EA Forums guide advises against relying entirely on mod-manager programs.
