Choose what you want to stop
“Vanilla mobs” can mean hostile mobs, passive animals, all vanilla mobs, or only particular species. The right approach depends on that scope and on whether Pokémon should continue spawning.
- Stop natural spawning broadly: try the gamerule, knowing that it may affect Pokémon and other modded spawns too.
- Remove vanilla mobs but preserve Pokémon: look for a compatible entity-control mod.
- Change Pokémon spawning: use Cobblemon’s own configuration or spawn data, not a vanilla-mob control.
Use the broad gamerule for a quick test
Community discussions recommend /gamerule doMobSpawning false as a broad way to stop natural mob spawning. Because it is a general mob-spawning rule rather than a vanilla-only setting, it can interfere with Cobblemon Pokémon spawning as well. Community reports also differ on edge cases in modded setups, so test it in a copy or test world if keeping Pokémon spawns matters. Community discussion of disabling vanilla mob spawns.
- Open the world with permission to use commands.
- Enter
/gamerule doMobSpawning falsein chat or the server console. - Observe natural spawns in your modpack, including Pokémon. If Pokémon stop spawning or the result is too broad, restore the rule with
/gamerule doMobSpawning trueand use a selective option instead.
Keep Pokémon spawning while removing vanilla mobs
A selective entity-control mod is a closer fit when you want vanilla mobs gone without suppressing Cobblemon Pokémon. The CurseForge project Cobblemon No Classic Mobs describes its purpose as disabling vanilla Minecraft mobs while allowing Cobblemon Pokémon to spawn normally. That description does not establish compatibility with every setup. Check the listing for your Minecraft version and mod loader, and confirm it fits your Cobblemon release and modpack before installing.

For selected vanilla species rather than all vanilla mobs, look for an entity-control mod whose supported configuration explicitly lets you target those entities. The cited project listing establishes its general purpose, not a species-by-species control list.
Why Cobblemon’s spawning settings are not the vanilla-mob switch
Cobblemon’s documented enableSpawning option controls whether Pokémon are allowed to spawn. Switching it off changes Pokémon spawning; it does not disable vanilla mob spawning. The official Cobblemon configuration documentation also lists exportSpawnConfig, which generates more specific Pokémon spawn settings.

Cobblemon Spawn Rules are a datapack feature for modifying Cobblemon spawn behavior. Their filters operate on eligible spawn details, with documented examples focused on Pokémon. Similarly, spawn_pool_world files define natural Pokémon spawning and can use enabled flags, conditions, and anticonditions. These tools control Cobblemon spawn definitions; the documentation does not establish them as controls for vanilla entity spawning. Check your result in the right scope
After changing a rule or installing a mod, observe the categories you actually meant to control: hostile mobs, passive animals, or selected species. Also check whether Pokémon still spawn if you intend to preserve them. Natural-spawning controls should not be assumed to remove entities already present in the world; the cited sources describe spawning behavior, not a cleanup command for existing mobs.
