Steam’s desktop client does not provide a single universal “refresh library” command in the official support guidance. If the Library looks stale, restart Steam first, then use the remedy that matches the problem: check the Download Manager for missing updates, clear the download cache for download trouble, repair a library folder that cannot update, or verify one game’s files if it appears damaged.
Start with Steam’s Download Manager
If a game or update is missing from the queue or not progressing, open the Download Manager using the Downloads link at the bottom of the client, View > Downloads, or Library > Downloads. It shows download progress, queued work, scheduled downloads, and completed updates. Steam’s guide to managing downloads and updates also lists per-game update settings, including “Always keep this game updated,” “Only update this game when I launch it,” and “High Priority.”
- Restart Steam. If that does not resolve the issue, restart the computer.
- Open the Download Manager and check whether the game or update is queued, scheduled, or completed.
- If the game is not entering the queue as expected, review its update setting in the Download Manager.
Clear the download cache for ongoing download problems
Use this when restarting Steam and checking the queue have not resolved a download issue. In the client, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then confirm. Steam says this does not affect installed games, but you will need to sign in again afterward. See Steam’s Clear download cache instructions.
Repair a library folder that cannot update games
If Steam cannot update games in a particular library folder, the folder may not be writable or its permissions may have broken. Go to Steam > Settings > Storage, open the menu next to the affected library, and choose Repair Folder. Steam describes this as a way to address library-folder update and permission problems in its Update & Installation Issues guidance.

Verify files when one game appears damaged or incomplete
For a problem with a specific installed game, open its Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks whether the game’s files are installed correctly; the process may take several minutes. Some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files. Steam advises against verifying multiple games at once or running verification during other intensive disk work. Follow Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files instructions.
Refresh the Remote Downloads page separately
If you mean the browser-based Remote Downloads Games page, refresh that webpage to check installation status. This is distinct from refreshing the desktop Library. Steam says the Steam application must remain running on the home PC or Mac for Remote Downloads to work; see its Remote Downloads instructions.
