Brutes attack players on sight regardless of what they’re wearing, and gold won’t distract them. To get away, retreat beyond its reach and use terrain to break line of sight. If you choose to fight, keep cover between you and the Brute and attack from range.
How to get away from a Piglin Brute
- Back away. Don’t stop to offer gold or try changing armor; neither will calm a Brute.
- Put terrain between you and it. Move behind a wall, corner, or other solid obstruction to break line of sight.
- Leave the immediate area. Keep retreating rather than closing in again. Watch for nearby Piglins, which may also become a threat if the Brute is hurt.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.16.2 release notes, published August 11, 2020, describe Brutes as Bastion Remnant guards and state that they attack players “no matter how they are dressed.” The notes also say gold cannot distract them.

What if you decide to fight?
A Brute is a melee threat, so avoid standing in the open within its reach. Use walls or other cover to limit its approach and attack from range. Keep track of nearby Piglins as well: hurting a Brute can make them another danger. Exact damage values are not included here because they depend on edition, version, difficulty, and armor context.
Why gold advice for Piglins doesn’t work on Brutes
Ordinary Piglins and Piglin Brutes do not respond to gold in the same way. Gold-related neutrality and distraction mechanics apply to ordinary Piglins in some situations, but a Brute attacks regardless of your clothing and cannot be distracted with a gold item. So don’t rely on gold armor or throwing gold when a Brute spots you; focus on getting out of reach and breaking line of sight.
