To recruit Emilia in Suikoden II, meet her at New Leaf Academy during the Greenhill story events, then speak with her again and tell her the truth about the party’s mission. She joins the army as its librarian.
Where to find Emilia
Progress through the story until the party enters Greenhill and visits New Leaf Academy as students. Emilia is the academy’s librarian. During the academy visit, speak with her as part of the tour; the walkthrough places the follow-up conversation at the front desk. GameFAQs’ Greenhill and Matilda walkthrough describes this encounter, while RPG Site’s recruitment guide also identifies the Greenhill academy sequence.

What to say to recruit her
- After the tour or initial conversation, talk to Emilia again.
- When she asks what the party is doing, honestly explain the group’s real mission. Recruitment guides identify telling the truth as the decisive response; Emilia then joins. Gensopedia’s Suikoden II recruitment guide and the RPG Site guide confirm this requirement.
If you missed the first conversation
Gensopedia reports that you can still recruit Emilia by speaking with her at New Leaf Academy after the Greenhill plot events. The guide does not specify the latest point at which this fallback works, so return to the academy as soon as you can rather than assuming the opportunity remains open indefinitely. What Emilia adds to headquarters
Emilia serves as the army’s librarian. Recruiting her opens the headquarters library, where you can store and read Old Books. Game8’s library guide, updated March 12, 2025, explains the library unlock.

Progression labels in guides
Some guides label this stretch of the game “Chapter 5” or associate it with “Castle Level 2.” Those labels are guide-specific context, not a confirmed universal requirement across editions. The practical trigger is the Greenhill story sequence: visit New Leaf Academy and be honest with Emilia.
