There is no single public checker for every Rust ban. A visible permanent Steam game-ban mark is one clue, but Steam does not display temporary game bans or suspensions. A ban from one community server may exist only in that server’s records—or in a shared system used by several servers. Check the issuer and scope before drawing a conclusion.
What a Steam profile can—and cannot—tell you
Steam says that only permanent game bans appear on a player’s profile; temporary game bans and suspensions are not shown there. A visible mark can therefore indicate a permanent game ban, but a profile without one does not prove the player has no Rust restriction.
VAC bans are a separate category: they restrict play on VAC-secured servers. A server administrator can also ban someone independently, and community servers may use third-party shared ban databases. Those restrictions do not all have the same scope or appear in the same place. Steam’s ban guidance explains the profile-visibility limits and developer-ban appeal route; Steam’s VAC guidance distinguishes VAC restrictions from administrator bans.
Identify the issuer and scope

What a kick or failed connection establishes
Being kicked from, or unable to join, one Rust server does not by itself establish a Facepunch-wide, EAC, or Valve ban. It may reflect that server’s own rule or ban list. Likewise, a clean-looking Steam profile cannot rule out a temporary restriction or a server-specific ban.

Rust’s administrator commands include tools for managing a local ban list. Facepunch also documents an optional centralized-banning setup in which a server owner configures an external API and the server checks a joining player’s 64-bit SteamID. In that documented setup, a 404 response means the ID is not banned in that configured API—not that the player is clear across all Rust servers. This is an administrator-side system, not a universal public lookup. See the centralized-banning documentation and Rust administrator command reference.
Use the support route that matches the ban
- Developer-issued Steam game ban: Steam says to contact the game developer, which holds the relevant ban data.
- EAC-issued ban: Facepunch’s EULA routes EAC-issued ban matters to EAC. The Facepunch support portal also says an EAC ban remains in place even if the Steam account was compromised.
- Valve-issued ban: Facepunch’s EULA routes Valve-issued ban matters to Steam.
- Community-server ban: Contact that server’s owner or administrators; Steam and Facepunch cannot determine a private server’s local list for you.
For account-specific help, Facepunch requires the ticket to be submitted while signed in to the Steam account that owns Rust and is associated with the issue. Its support portal says it cannot provide account-specific help or process a ticket otherwise. The routing distinctions are set out in the Rust Steam EULA.

One ban category with distinct terms
Facepunch’s article updated September 17, 2026 says its “playing with cheaters” ban is permanent, manually issued and reviewed, and not appealable through its support process; it says appeals are automatically rejected because staff review the bans when issuing them. Facepunch also states: “You can continue playing Rust on community servers.” These terms apply to that specific ban category, not necessarily every Rust restriction.
