Start by checking Activision and your platform’s service status, then check storage and system updates before changing game files. The right next step depends on whether the update is missing, stuck downloading, or failing to install—and on which Call of Duty game, platform, and launcher you use.
First, identify where the update is failing
“Not updating” can mean several different things. Note the exact game, device, PC launcher or store, any error code, and how much free storage remains. Then identify the stage:
- No update appears: Check the game’s update option and whether the content you need is installed.
- Download is queued, slow, or stalled: Check service status and your connection before changing local files.
- Download completes but installation fails: Check available space and system software, then consider file repair.
Call of Duty menus and content options differ by title and platform. Activision’s Warzone installation guide and Black Ops 7 installation guide are examples of title-specific instructions, not universal menu paths.
Check whether services or your connection are the problem
Before troubleshooting the local installation, check Activision Online Services and the network-status page for your platform. These pages can change, so check them when the problem is happening. If Activision’s service appears online but you still have connection trouble, Activision recommends checking your platform’s network status and trying connection basics such as restarting your router, using a wired connection, checking connection speed, and limiting other bandwidth-heavy applications.

Those steps can help investigate connection trouble; they do not establish that your home network caused a particular update failure.
Check storage, system software, and installed content
Free up space if necessary
Make sure the device has enough free storage for the update and installation process. Activision identifies storage limits as a possible reason an installation or update may fail, but there is no single minimum size that applies to every Call of Duty game, update, and installed content combination. Use your platform’s storage settings to remove content you no longer need, and consult the guide for your game before deleting packs you may want to keep.

Install available console system updates
On a console, complete any available system software update before retrying the game update. Activision’s installation guidance includes checking console software and finishing system updates before starting a game installation. Afterward, return to the game in your library or on its home-screen tile and check for an update or a paused download.
Use the launcher that owns your PC installation
On PC, open the store or launcher where the game is installed and owned. Activision’s guides provide different installation steps for Battle.net and Steam; do not switch launchers unless you know your game is associated with that launcher. Check its library for a pending game update or paused download.

Check whether you need a content pack, not a base-game update
If the game opens but a mode or other content is unavailable, the missing item may be a component rather than the base game update. Activision describes managing content through Manage Files in Call of Duty and through content-selection menus on supported platforms and launchers. Check the relevant game guide for the available options on your device.

- Steam: Verify the game’s local files from the game’s properties in your Steam Library.
- Microsoft Store: Open the game’s Manage menu and choose Verify and Repair.
- Battle.net: Activision describes removing Battle.net cache or files and reopening the app. Treat removal of the wider Battle.net folder as a later measure: Activision warns that Battle.net may forget game install locations. If the game then shows Install instead of Play, you may need to locate the existing installation again.
Cache and file operations are later troubleshooting steps because they change local data or launcher state; use the instructions for your specific platform rather than deleting unrelated folders.
Contact support if the update still fails
Use Activision’s Support Options to select the relevant game, platform, and issue category. Include the exact error text or code, where the game is installed, which update stage fails, available free space, and the steps you have already tried. This gives support the details needed to route an update, download, or installation problem.
