Lightning Spear is a good ranged miracle for a Faith-focused character who is willing to join the Warrior of Sunlight covenant. It offers ten casts for one attunement slot and lets you deal lightning damage from a distance, but its covenant and Faith requirements make it a deliberate build choice—not a universally worthwhile pickup. Its committed casting animation also makes it risky when enemies or PvP opponents can punish the wind-up.
There is a naming wrinkle: Lightning Spear can also mean a melee weapon found in Sen’s Fortress. That weapon is separate from the miracle, so the verdict below is about the ranged spell unless noted otherwise.

What does the Lightning Spear miracle do?
Lightning Spear is an offensive miracle that hurls a lightning projectile at a target. Its in-game description reads: “Miracle passed down to those bound by the Warrior of Sunlight covenant. Hurl Lightning spear.” According to the Dark Souls Wiki, it requires 20 Faith, uses one attunement slot, and has ten casts per attunement. Its listed 2.7 multiplier applies to a talisman’s Magic Adjustment; it is not a flat damage figure. The damage you deal therefore depends on your equipped talisman and the target’s defenses.
The projectile can also create an area lightning effect when thrown into water, as described by the same miracle reference. That interaction can be useful in the right environment, but the spell is otherwise a targeted projectile rather than a broad-area attack.

How do you get Lightning Spear?
You acquire the miracle by joining the Warrior of Sunlight covenant at the Altar of Sunlight. The normal entry requirement is 25 Faith. It drops by five for each area boss you defeat while summoned as a white phantom, so co-op boss victories can reduce the stat investment needed to qualify. Joining the covenant grants Lightning Spear, according to the covenant reference.
That makes the requirement more flexible than a strict 25-Faith gate, but the miracle still asks for 20 Faith to cast. If your character is not already investing in Faith, the covenant route and stat commitment may outweigh the benefit of adding one ranged attack.

Great Lightning Spear is a direct power increase over the basic miracle while keeping the same listed uses and slot cost, but it asks for 30 Faith and ten Sunlight Medals. Sunlight Spear has the highest listed multiplier of the three, but its five uses, two slots, 50 Faith requirement, and later acquisition make it a much larger commitment. The basic Lightning Spear is therefore most appealing when you want a ranged lightning option without pursuing the highest-tier version.

When is Lightning Spear worth using?
It suits Faith builds that need a ranged option
The miracle lets a Faith character attack without first closing to melee range. A guide describes it as long-range and notes that lightning can be advantageous against some enemy types, including dragons; treat that as matchup guidance, not a guarantee that every target will take exceptional damage. Its ten casts and one-slot cost also make it relatively easy to fit into a loadout. The miracle reference lists its uses and slot cost, while the guide discusses its range and matchups.
It is less attractive when casting is unsafe
The cited mechanics reference characterizes the cast as long. That commitment leaves a window for an enemy to interrupt you or for a PvP opponent to punish the animation. Because the projectile is aimed at a target, poor timing or aim can also waste a cast. Use it when distance and an opening make the throw practical; do not assume its range alone makes it safe.

Its value depends on your alternatives
Judge it against the way you play, not just the listed multiplier. The useful questions are whether you already meet the Faith and covenant requirements, how much you value ranged damage, how many attunement slots you can spare, and whether you can cast without being interrupted. If you plan to raise Faith and progress the covenant, Great Lightning Spear offers a clear upgrade path; if not, the basic miracle’s modest investment in slots may not compensate for the effort to obtain it.
What if you mean the Lightning Spear weapon?
The other Lightning Spear is a melee spear found in a Mimic chest in Sen’s Fortress. It follows a weapon upgrade path, not the miracle’s covenant acquisition. The weapon reference lists Lightning Spear +0 at 144 physical plus 144 lightning attack rating. Those are attack-rating values, not damage per hit; defenses and other game mechanics affect actual damage.
