To recruit Magus in Chrono Trigger, go to the North Cape in 12,000 B.C. after Zeal’s fall, examine the blue light, and choose No when he asks whether you want to fight. Choosing Yes starts a battle instead of adding him to your party.
Where to find Magus
The recruitment scene takes place at the North Cape in 12,000 B.C., late in the story after the events surrounding Zeal’s fall. It is separate from the earlier confrontation at Magus’s castle. Walkthroughs place the encounter after the Epoch route becomes available. Chrono Compendium’s SNES walkthrough and a separate walkthrough describe the North Cape meeting.

How to recruit him
- After Zeal’s fall, travel to the North Cape in 12,000 B.C.
- Examine the blue light there to trigger the scene.
- When Magus offers a fight, choose No. Declining his challenge recruits him as a playable party member.
A GameFAQs answer labeled for the Nintendo DS version describes the same route: reach the North Cape and decline the battle. It is user-contributed, rather than an official game guide. GameFAQs: How do I get Magus?
What happens if you choose Yes?
Choosing Yes begins a boss fight instead of recruiting Magus. One walkthrough reports that Frog confronts Magus alone if Frog is in the party, but the available walkthrough accounts do not establish that this battle setup is identical across every version of the game. The SNES walkthrough and the separate walkthrough agree on the central choice: decline the challenge to recruit him.
