It matches Mistle’s tattoo and serves as a memento of their connection. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt gives the mark a brief callback, but leaves the story behind it largely unexplained.
How Ciri got the matching rose tattoo
The tattoo’s backstory belongs to Ciri’s time with the Rats, a gang she falls in with during a dangerous and unsettled period of her life. Mistle, one of the Rats, becomes closely connected to her. A tattooist named Almavera gives Ciri and Mistle matching roses: red flowers with green stems and two leaves, placed on the upper thigh near the groin. The episode is told in The Tower of the Swallow.
The mark is a memento of Mistle and their relationship. But that relationship begins in a coercive, violent situation: Mistle first takes advantage of Ciri after another Rat has tried to assault her. Ciri’s circumstances with the group are not freely chosen throughout, so the tattoo should not be read as a simple romance token detached from that context. Before leaving the Rats, Ciri gets the matching mark and promises to return for Mistle.
What the tattoo means in The Witcher 3
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the tattoo comes up during Ciri’s sauna scene in Skellige. She can describe it as a memory of someone special who died. The game does not name Mistle or recount the events with the Rats, so players who have not read the novels get only a short, subdued allusion.

Novel story vs. game reference
| Version | What it explains | How it frames the tattoo |
|---|---|---|
| The Witcher novels | Ciri’s time with the Rats, her connection to Mistle, and the matching tattoo. | A memento set within a complicated relationship and a coercive, violent period of Ciri’s life. |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | A brief sauna-scene line about someone special who died; it does not retell the episode. | A quiet callback for players who recognize the reference. |
Where to read the full story
For the book context, look to The Tower of the Swallow, where Almavera is identified in the tattoo’s story. The game’s line is a reference to that material rather than a full explanation of it.
