Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and turn on 120 Hz Output. That enables 120 Hz output when your display and the game support it; it cannot force every game to run at 120 frames per second.
Turn on 120 Hz Output
- On your PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Switch 120 Hz Output on. PlayStation describes this option as enabling 120 Hz video output for TVs and games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. See PlayStation Support’s PS5 resolution guidance.
What you need for 120 Hz
120 Hz output depends on the console, display, connection, and the game’s support. The setting is an enabler, not a system-wide frame-rate override: a game or mode that does not support 120 Hz will not be made to run at 120 fps by switching it on.
- A compatible display: Check that the TV or monitor supports 120 Hz at your intended resolution. For 4K at 120 Hz, confirm that the specific display supports that combination.
- The correct HDMI port: Some displays have ports with different capabilities. Check the display manual for which port supports the desired signal and whether a setting on the TV or monitor must be enabled.
- A suitable HDMI connection: Sony recommends using the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If it is missing or faulty, Sony identifies an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz as an alternative. A replacement is not automatically necessary if the included cable works.
- Game support: The game must support a 120 Hz frame rate, and the selected mode must offer it.
Sony says the PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120 Hz video output. That does not mean every HDMI port on a TV supports 4K 120 Hz; check the specifications and manual for your particular display. Sony’s guidance is at PlayStation Support.
Troubleshoot 4K at 120 Hz
If you get no picture when expecting 4K 120 Hz, or the signal appears as 1080p at 120 Hz, check the settings and connection in this order:

- Confirm the display’s capability. Verify that its specifications support 4K at 120 Hz, not merely 4K or 120 Hz separately.
- Use the display’s appropriate HDMI port. Consult the manual and enable any required HDMI or enhanced-signal setting on the display.
- Check the PS5 video settings. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic. Sony says transfer-rate settings of -1 or -2 limit 4K 120 Hz output.
- Check the cable. Try the included PS5 HDMI cable first. If you need a replacement, use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz.
- Update the display firmware and check its settings. The TV or monitor may need current firmware or a particular configuration to accept the signal.
- Isolate intermediary equipment. Connect the PS5 directly to the display to test whether a receiver or other device in the signal path is interfering.
For Sony’s full troubleshooting guidance, including cases with no picture or a 1080p 120 Hz signal instead of 4K 120 Hz, see the PS5 resolution guide and PlayStation’s 4K 120 Hz troubleshooting guidance.
1440p output and VRR
If your display supports 1440p, the PS5’s Test 1440p Output option can check SDR and HDR output at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, as well as VRR. Sony notes that test results vary by TV. VRR adjusts the refresh rate in real time when both the display and game support it; it does not make an unsupported game run at 120 Hz. See Sony’s PS5 resolution guidance and PlayStation’s VRR guidance.

Choosing a display for 120 Hz
If you are comparing TVs or monitors, check these details for the exact model rather than relying on a general “120 Hz” label:
- Does it support 120 Hz at the resolution you want—especially 4K at 120 Hz, if that is your target?
- Which HDMI ports support that resolution and refresh rate?
- Does the display require a setting to be enabled for the relevant HDMI port?
- Does it support VRR for the games you play?
The display model and its manual determine the port-specific details; without a model number, compatibility cannot be confirmed.
