In a June 2019 interview, former Sledgehammer Games co-studio head Michael Condrey said he respected developers’ artistic vision but felt conflicted about the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot. He worried that publisher pressure might push a studio toward controversy or darker material “for the sake of headlines”—a concern he expressed, not evidence that such pressure was applied.
Why Condrey was conflicted about the 2019 reboot
GamesBeat reporter Dean Takahashi interviewed Condrey on June 24, 2019, after E3, while the reboot was still upcoming. Asked about the game, Condrey began from a defense of creative freedom: “I maintain that video games are the most important art form of our time.” He said he respected developers making work that reflected their artistic vision.
His unease was about the conditions in which that work might be made. Condrey said he was concerned that publishing pressure could encourage controversy or darker material for the sake of headlines. The interview records his worry; it does not establish that Activision or Infinity Ward exerted such pressure.
He also had a personal connection to the series. “I absolutely loved the original Modern Warfare series, and working on MW3, at the height of the franchise’s popularity, was a special opportunity,” he said. That affection did not settle his view of a new game set in contemporary conflict: “So, I’m torn Dean, to be totally honest.”

How his earlier Call of Duty work shaped the comparison
Condrey contrasted the reboot’s present-day setting with the kinds of conflicts his teams had previously depicted. He described Sledgehammer’s work on Modern Warfare 3 as telling an intense story within a clearly fictional universe. In 2014, he and Glen Schofield described Sledgehammer’s work with Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3 before the studio moved on to Advanced Warfare, a near-future game built around exoskeleton movement.
He characterized Call of Duty: WWII differently: the team sought to pay tribute to a singular historical conflict. GamesBeat’s 2017 account described the project as a return to WWII-era infantry combat, developed over three years under Condrey and Schofield. For Condrey, a historical setting and a fictional near-future world posed different creative questions from representing contemporary warfare.

Why contemporary warfare raised a different challenge
Condrey connected his uncertainty to the real-world context of the preceding decade. He referred to mass shootings and the Christchurch attack as real and heartbreaking events, explaining why a contemporary setting felt difficult to approach. He was discussing the emotional and creative weight of depicting current violence; his comments were not a claim that a video game causes violence.
He summarized the problem this way: “The creative challenges of realistic ‘modern warfare’ are complex.” The interview presents his perspective on the subject, rather than a full analysis of the reboot’s story or its eventual treatment of real-world conflicts.

His criticism of a simplistic Middle East story
When asked about the Middle East setting and reported violence, Condrey rejected a simple moral division between Western protagonists and Middle Eastern antagonists: “Western ‘heroes’ killing ‘villains’ in the Middle East simply isn’t good enough.” He was criticizing that narrative frame as inadequate to the subject’s complexity. The remark should not be treated as a complete description of Modern Warfare’s plot or every portrayal in the game.

The interview is best read as one former developer’s reflection on creative responsibility and setting, not as a verdict on the finished game.
