To summon the Empress of Light in Terraria, find a live Prismatic Lacewing in the Surface Hallow between 7:30 PM and midnight, then kill it. The cited guides say Plantera must already be defeated in that world. A Lacewing Jar will not summon the boss.
What you need before looking for a Lacewing
- Defeat Plantera in the same world. This prerequisite is reported by the Vintage Is The New Old FAQ (2023).
- Go to the Surface Hallow. Both cited sources place the Lacewing there; they specify the surface rather than an underground area. FAQ (2023); Steam Community guide (2020).
- Search during the game-clock window. The sources give 7:30 PM through 12:00 AM. These are in-game times, not real-world hours. FAQ (2023); Steam Community guide (2020).
How to summon the boss
- Travel to the Surface Hallow after defeating Plantera in that world.
- Wait until the in-game clock reaches 7:30 PM, then look for a live Prismatic Lacewing until midnight.
- Kill the live Lacewing. That is the action that summons the Empress of Light, according to the cited FAQ.
Kill it now or capture it?
If you want to summon the boss immediately, kill the live Lacewing. If you want to hold onto one for later, the Steam Community guide recommends catching it with the in-game Bug Net or a better net. Do not mistake a jarred Lacewing for a summoning item: the FAQ says the Lacewing Jar is decorative and does not summon the Empress.

Optional ways to farm Lacewings
The Steam Community guide suggests using Battle Potions and Water Candles to increase spawn activity while farming. Those are optional player-guide suggestions, not stated summoning requirements. Neither changes the core trigger: kill a live Lacewing during the stated conditions.
Version and platform scope
The cited FAQ and Steam guide agree on the location and time window, but neither source identifies the game version or platform scope. Their accounts also place Plantera defeat before the search, with that prerequisite specifically reported by the FAQ. The available sources therefore do not establish whether these rules vary by version or platform.
