In standard Minecraft survival, you can’t return to the Overworld alive while the Ender Dragon is still alive. The exit portal activates after the dragon is defeated. An End gateway won’t take you home; it leads to the End’s outer islands.

Why common workarounds don’t solve it
End gateways
A gateway is an End-to-End transport route, not an exit to the Overworld. It cannot substitute for the activated exit portal.
Items and inventory storage
An ender chest can preserve stored items if you die, but it does not keep your character alive or provide a route home. The cited survival guidance does not establish an ender pearl or other ordinary item as a way to leave the End alive while the dragon remains alive.

Java, Bedrock, and nonstandard play
The question does not specify an edition, version, or server setup. Minecraft’s official portal-frame explainer notes a Java/Bedrock difference in which strongholds have an End portal; that is about reaching the End, not evidence of a different return mechanic. Commands, server teleportation, mods, and custom rules may change what is possible, but the cited sources do not establish how every such setup behaves. If you are playing on a server or with altered settings, check with its admin or consult the mod’s documentation rather than assuming a standard survival mechanic applies.
