To remove the Cursed Ring of Hircine in Skyrim, help Sinding during the Daedric quest “Ill Met by Moonlight”: fight the hunters with him in Bloated Man’s Grotto, then leave the grotto. Hircine appears outside and removes the curse, giving you the uncursed Ring of Hircine. You normally cannot unequip the cursed ring before completing this quest route.
Remove the curse by helping Sinding
- Continue “Ill Met by Moonlight.” The Cursed Ring of Hircine is tied to this Daedric quest and is normally locked on your character until the quest reaches its resolution. Trying to unequip it early is not the intended fix. The Skyrim item page describes the ring’s quest restriction.
- Go to Bloated Man’s Grotto and help Sinding. When the quest presents the choice, do not kill him if your goal is to have Hircine remove the curse through the hunt.
- Defeat the hunters alongside Sinding. Once the hunters are dead, leave Bloated Man’s Grotto.
- Speak with Hircine outside. Hircine removes the curse and awards the uncursed Ring of Hircine on this route. The quest walkthrough and accepted player answer describe this outcome: IGN’s “Ill Met by Moonlight” guide and the GameFAQs discussion.
What if you kill Sinding?
Killing Sinding is an alternate choice in the quest, but it is not the route for helping him and getting Hircine to remove the curse as described above. If you have already chosen to kill him, the quest has taken the other reward path; the cited walkthrough and player answer support the help-Sinding route for the uncursed ring.
If the ring is still equipped after the quest
A ring that remains stuck after the expected quest resolution may indicate a quest bug or a mod-related problem. A community-maintained quest page lists edge cases, and a May 2019 Skyrim Special Edition forum thread reports one player’s stuck-ring issue. Those reports do not establish a fix that works across editions, platforms, patches, or mod setups.

- Check whether the quest actually reached its ending and whether you left the grotto after the hunt.
- If possible, reload a save from before the ring became stuck and complete the intended route again.
- For a persistent issue, seek advice specific to your game edition, platform, mods, and exact quest state. PC console commands are not available to console players, and removing a quest item by command could affect inventory or progression.
