In Hollow Knight: Silksong, fight by reading an enemy’s attack, dodging or repositioning, then using the opening to land Needle hits. Some attacks can be parried with a Needle swing, and successful hits build Silk for healing or Silk Skills. If a fight keeps going badly, change your approach—or explore and learn elsewhere instead of forcing the encounter.
How to fight ordinary enemies
Hornet’s Needle is your main close-range weapon. Think of combat as a sequence of cues, movement, and openings rather than trading hits. Xbox Wire described the feel as “less like a slugfest and more like a swordfight” (Xbox Wire’s hands-on preview).
- Watch the enemy. Look for the start of an attack, a feint, a backstep, or a guard. Those behaviors can change when it is safe to approach.
- Evade or reposition first. Move clear of the attack or toward a safer angle before committing to a strike. In a crowded fight, track more than one enemy so you do not attack into another threat.
- Hit during the opening. A Needle strike damages the enemy and is the primary way to gain Silk. Do not stay close simply to keep attacking if the enemy is already starting another move.
- Choose your next action. Use more attacks if the opening remains safe, parry an eligible attack when its cue is clear, or disengage to avoid taking damage.
When and how to parry
Some enemy attacks can be parried with an ordinary Needle swing. The community-maintained Silksong combat reference says most attacks marked by a white trailing line can be parried this way. Treat that cue as a guide, not a promise that every attack is parryable; an attack without the cue, or one with unfamiliar behavior, may be safer to dodge.
- Use a Needle swing for the ordinary parry. Tools and other damage sources do not perform that same parry.
- Some multi-hit attacks can be parried in sequence if you continue swinging after the first successful parry.
- Some projectiles can be struck and deflected back toward enemies, but projectile behavior varies; do not assume every incoming shot can be returned.
- Cross Stitch is a separate Silk Skill, not another name for the ordinary Needle parry.
The community reference documents a 0.25-second invulnerability window for a parry. That precise timing is community-documented and may be affected by updates, so use the enemy’s cue and your own timing rather than treating the number as a guaranteed window in every current version.

Manage Silk as both a resource and a reward for attacking
Hitting enemies is the primary way Hornet gains Silk. Silk can be spent on Bind to heal or on Silk Skills, so attacking connects your offense to your next defensive or special move (PlayStation Blog’s hands-on report).
Bind is not an automatic best choice whenever it is available: spending Silk on it means less Silk remains for a Skill. PlayStation Blog describes Bind as restoring three health points when the gauge is full and consuming all Silk; the community combat reference gives the default Bind cost as nine Silk. These are source-documented mechanics, and exact details can be version-sensitive. Decide based on your health, the safety of the moment, and whether a Silk Skill is more useful for the encounter.

Change your tools or combat style when a direct approach fails
Tools can add ranged attacks, traps, and other tactical options. Crests change Hornet’s combat style, including attack characteristics and loadout. There is no universally best setup established for every enemy: choose equipment in response to the problem in front of you.
- Enemy keeps its distance: consider whether a ranged Tool or a safer way to close the gap would help.
- Enemy punishes close attacks: prioritize evasive positioning, traps, or a setup that lets you create an opening before moving in.
- Enemy guards, feints, or retreats: wait for the behavior to resolve rather than repeating the same approach on a predictable rhythm.
- Several enemies crowd you: favor options that help control space and avoid getting surrounded.
When comparing approaches, weigh range and attack speed, defensive value, Silk generation versus Silk cost, the enemy’s movement or defenses, and whether the arena gives you room to maneuver. Patch 3 adjusted or fixed several combat-related details, including Sharp Dart, Cross Stitch, Rune Rage, Thread Storm, and Curveclaw behavior; its Patch 3 notes are not a guarantee that no later changes occurred.

What to do when an enemy keeps beating you
Do not assume that repeating the same attack pattern is the only way forward. In a PC Gamer report on an ACMI Game Worlds exhibit interview, Team Cherry co-designer Ari Gibson said players can mitigate difficulty through “exploration, or learning, or even circumventing the challenge entirely, rather than getting stonewalled” (PC Gamer’s report).
- Identify what is going wrong. Notice whether you are being caught by an attack cue, staying too close, missing a parry, or losing track of another enemy.
- Change one thing. Try a different approach, Tool, or Crest rather than making several changes at once; that makes it easier to tell what helped.
- Leave and return if needed. Explore another route or spend time learning elsewhere, then come back with a clearer read of the fight.
Adjust your approach for bosses and gauntlets
Bosses
Bosses are distinct from ordinary enemies: many have larger health pools and may gate progress. Focus on learning the attack sequence and finding repeatable safe openings instead of treating every moment as a chance to attack. The community combat reference reports that most boss staggers are triggered by hit count rather than damage, and that not all bosses stagger; these detailed mechanics are version-sensitive, so avoid building a strategy around an assumed stagger.

Enemy Gauntlets
Enemy Gauntlets can lock the arena and send multiple enemies at you. In constrained space, prioritize avoiding overlap between threats and moving to a position where you can see incoming attacks. Use area-control or ranged options if they help you manage the group, but preserve enough room to evade rather than committing to attacks that leave Hornet boxed in.
